What are the symptoms of a spun rod bearing or a spun main bearing?
I just want to know in case it ever happens to me so I shut down the engine immediately.
Oh, also, what happens if I keep running it and ignoring the sound? (not that I'd ever do it, just curious)

Keep running it, min crank and rods, keep going and maybe more.

If its a rod, it will knock like someone is trying to get out of the engine, broke a rod, and gernaded a piston last weekend.,

Well, from personal experience  ...oil bath out of the breathers, bits of metal in the oil, knocking sound...then engine lock up which could break rods/crank and damage block.

We spun a main bearing in our 500 Chevy a while back. We knew the motor was tired but still had to run it. At the end of the pass the boat shook violently and had to shut her down. Tried to run the next round so we could win the championship over Tony but no love. Ended up losing the championship by 12 points. Anyways, we took the motor apart a while later (we knew the motor was toast) and found 2 main caps broke in half. 2 of Rods that got feed by the mains were pounded to sh*t. We broke a wrist pin in one and destroyed the other. believe it or not we took the crank, had it checked and turned. We have plans here pretty soon to use it. Everything else is going to be use to make a coffee table.
