So tell us what resolved it-I'll sure not the butchering of Linder's hull design.

PleasantCat,
Saw your posting on OO. It is a bit worrying that out of all the “experts” you have spoken to I was the only one that suggested that you turn the props in. Glad you did this prior to butchering the hull. Have you noticed any difference in speed? How is she in the turns?

pleasantcat
05-18-2006, 04:28 PM
well i ran 113mph but the main thing i got there without drama. turns fine and yes im glad i didnt butcher this thing as well.

Havasu Hangin,
My apologies –I didn’t see the earlier post where you did suggest this. It is clear that the extra lift from the props spinning out combined with the wedges on the running pads is not allowing the boat to set. It would be interesting to see anyone with a Chris Cat or A/O 31 has filled the front of the wedges to flatten the pad(s). Anyone??

pleasantcat
05-19-2006, 01:18 PM
some of the hulls i looked at had les wedge than mine but, at this point who cares. i now know what makes it run correctly. hh i figured i woulda seen you guys in havazoo last weekend.

Pleasent Cat was that you with red blower scoops running up river Sat. also by the sandbar. I was in the 36' daytona family with me of course. Boat looked good and also looked like it was ridin nice at speed :rollside:

Pl-Cat,
I wasn’t suggesting that you touch your hull. It is universally know to be one of the great ones. I was simply curious to see if anyone has done any experimentation on the running surface since George Linder spent considerable time designing and tweaking it the 80’s. The interesting thing is that most great hull forms cost so much in design and testing time that few small builders (and many large ones), can afford to build them from scratch……the reason for so many splashes. There are numerous cases of builders that started their line with a splash then “had a go” with other models of their own design and created universally appalling hulls. With the exception of a few talented individuals such as Peter@ Skater, builders generally do not have the hydrodynamic (or particularly with Cats), aerodynamic knowledge. Enough rambling –How rough does it get at Havasu? It is rough conditions where you will really see the hull shine.

pleasantcat
05-22-2006, 05:33 AM
gn2rvr, yep that was me. heck i thought we would get to run but when we got to the sanbar i saw you had the family with you and understood
grahm, well the guys at a.o. were guessing at so many reasons why this thing was soo bad but always insited i should never turn the props in. they just wanted me to throw dollars at it and hope it got better. when i had my eliminator they never guessed at questions i threw theyre way they knew. im happy with the way it runs and handles now and with more seat time and tweeking im sure it will be a great performer. to run 110mph here at my local lake with ease and 113-115 in havazoo during the summer tells me im getting close.
the video is in the process of being knocked down in size for the computer so it may be a few days. thanks everyone for the input!!!

grahamgilly123

Well, that is amongst the worst that I have seen. On glass calm there is often a little lope in certain speed ranges but this is mad. Craig- do you have a video of a run with the props turning in?

05-24-2006, 02:06 PM

What speed does the mild lope stop at? Also how much do you think your blowers and Ex-boxes weigh in total?

pleasantcat
05-24-2006, 03:20 PM
all i do is burp the throttles and it stops. i know from lifting the old blowers out and the new in that the new blowers are lighter. plus i pulled the recirc pumps and rigged it with x-overs. so i should be 100+ lbs lighter on the stern.

pleasantcat

05-24-2006, 03:28 PM
thats insane I have been tow tank testing my hull( 1/8 scale) the last few months and have never seen poroise like that even my old daytona wasnt that bad

grahamgilly123
05-24-2006, 03:30 PM
Cool- When you say burp do you mean a quick nudge of the throttles forward or back? If you still couldn’t get rid of it a bit of weight in the bow will return the CG to the original design point but it seems that you’ve got it sorted. Bet you also find the trim much more responsive with the props turning in.

pleasantcat
05-24-2006, 03:33 PM
just a nudge forward and it goes away. i dont trim the boat much at all it has one spot it like and i leave it alone for the most part.

grahamgilly123
05-24-2006, 03:37 PM
When you're running down wind next time, try playing with the trim a bit (carefully), you'll be amazed at the extra speed and also how well it flies over swells.

Thanks Craig- great footage- I’d be very interested to see a run accelerated from 50 MPH to 100MPH with the props turning in. It’ll also be interesting to see how the bow lift increases (assuming the same trim settings) with the props turning in. In the video it is clear that the bow is getting pushed down, the impact bounces the boat in the air, the props hit first, force the bow down again and on and on it goes. You can see on the re-entry from the hop- that the forward step is the first point of impact- again-great footage -one can really analyse the source of the problem with this.
