My friend just bought a wrecked 1970 cougar elim for parts for his 67 stang conv.
He bought it for 1K and got a 351c 4v, disk brakes, a posi 355 9 inch and an auto tranny that I don't know what it is. It has a separate bell housing/trans. What is it?? I am hoping a C6. Any other info about this stuff would be great.
Thanks,
Clay
P.S.
anyone need any Cougar parts??????????

Sounds like a C4 to me, I thought all the C6's didn't have the removable bellhousing. I could be wrong, $1000. sounds like a good deal for all that.

Skeep, it's an FMX select shift [separate bellhousing] . C-6's are coupled mostly to big block fords like 429-460.

Skeep , the cast iron tranny's last forever. I had the FMX twin turbo drive tranny in my 64 lincoln , and it was hauling the mail [ and my boat :D ] at 168K miles without problems. They'll never pounce like their aluminum cousins!

Perhaps the most important thing to do with that tranny is to just get rid of it.
Ford was trying to make a performance-related transmission, and in order to make it "stronger" they cast the case from iron.
Really, when was the last time you saw a tranny case crack in a passenger car or truck? (I've seen just one...and it was a fluke for sure).
Ford's intentions were good, but what you really have there is a major weight disadvantage especially for a convertible. Get rid of it. Your 3500 lb Mustang with ANY 351 will never benefit by having an FMX behind it.
I don't think Ford manufactured that box for many consectutive years--for the above-noted reasons.

Skeep That should be just fine for the 351 Cleveland. Some people even bolt C4's to the back of a 460 (depending on application; C6's can rob a little more power than C4's, and in a mild 460 you might be able to get a way with the C4, depending on overall car weight, r/e ratio and engine output).
4-barrel Clevelands are nice motors and if, in fact, you have the 4-barrel heads, you could build a screamer engine. Should you decide to do that, freshen up the C4 and at least put a shift kit in it. That early 'stang would really move.

Speaking of Fords, there's been a two part series about the history of Ford Racing in the Oct and Nov editions of Drag Racer. That 427 SHOC camer is bad ass!

LO,
How hard is it to freshen up a c4????? Is there alot of specialty tools to take the bands and pump out???? Or should I just tighten up the bands and put a shift kit in it?
Thanks for all of the info, I really apprecite it guys.

Clay "Skeep" A C4 is no more difficult to build than any other automatic. There are a few special tools needed but with some improvising they can be subsituted. Like the hi/rev. drum spring compressor I use a piece of round stock and 2 C clamps to compress the springs. Your FMX box is sort of an orphan now. Parts are getting hard to find and the biggest drawback with those is the case center support usually cracks rendering the case useless. Dump the FMX for the C4.
