How do these work? Do they have forward & reverse? Low & high gears?

Basic trans... Drum, planitary and a band. Most of the guts are a Ford trans part. Reliable and fairly strong. Within reason!!!!

IIRC, 1:1 forward and 1.1:1 reverse. Parts and overhaul kits are everywhere- there's manuals on ebay all the time, too. There's the 71C and the 72C- with the 72C rated for more HP and the better choice of the two. Keep your eyes open and you'll find a bellhousing drilled for one.
I've got one in my Rayson 18LP flat. Beats paddling to the trailer....
