scoote69,
Did you buy your Daytona from Mike Tomlinson in Dallas?

SCOOTE69

Yes I did. He and geoff, who lurks here, have been great so far. Do you know them?
Im trying, and failing, to post a few more pics. They are in the reader ride stern drive section now.

scoote69, Sweet looking Daytona!!!!!!! I can tell it's a blown motor, how big is it ? And who built it for you? What speeds are you looking for from this set up?

Thank you. Ill post more picks after its finished.
The engine is a Teague, 509ci with a 10-71 (with an extended 2 year warranty) attached to a Teague xr platinum drive. The boat ran 115 loaded, at altitude, and with 1 hour on the engine. Ive got a new mercury 5 blade on order and am hoping for 120 at sea level after its broken in.

Its a single Teague with a platinum xr drive. You're right, Mike has a lot of the "scoop" and a great job. He just got back from key west for some super light races and befor that he was at loto with a group trying to go 200 mph-- they got snowed out though.

Hi Scoote:
I just took delivery of my 25 Daytona a few months ago (HP500 with Whipple). I am only seeing 83-89 mph depending on load, water, wind, etc. I noticed your Gimble is just about touching the rub rail. Mine is about an inch below the rail. Just curious as to the length of your drive and plane time. I'm thinking about putting a 2 inch shorter lower, but don't want to sacrafice too much on take off. Any thoughts?

i am with you on your question...my 25 daytona with an 800hp whippled 540 turning a 30 pitch bravo runs a solid 100mph but not much more..
it would be interesting to know what makes this rig that much faster.....

Very nice ride scoote69. My buddy is has a 97, 25 Daytona single step, 600sc w/intercooler and upgraded cam, running 108mph. Last time I spoke with him he was mounting up a new lower unit from Teague.......the Bravo couldn't take the pressure.

Having zero seat time Im not sure about planing, top end, x dimension, etc. But a few things: I have a 2 step hull, rather than a 1 step. Thats supposed to be good for 2 mph or so. The drive is the teague platinum xr which has some internal buffs but (I think) no changes to the outer measurments--Ill check and let you all know. If you need exact measurments on the drive placement let me know.
I was not in the boat when tested but I have no reason to doubt Mike's claim of 115mph, as he is taking me on my maiden voyage in texas and we will have the gps there to make sure Im getting the exact same, if not better, top end as the test. When I spoke to bob teague last year to discuss an engine he also guaranteed 114 on a gps, as he has several of this engine in 25 daytonas. I have a 1.36 drive, are you using a 1.5? Let me know what else you are running and I can see if my set up differs at all. Then Ill post my texas speed numbers as soon as I get 10 hours on the boat.
As an aside, if you read this month's Powerboat they test a 26 daytona, which is a lot bigger boat, with a teague 1000 and got over 120.

Scoot, unless things have changed with the 2003 bottoms, I've always heard the one step bottom is faster then the two step. A couple of friends have each different style and this seerms to hold true from what we've seen. They made the two step to try and get rid of some of the minor midrange porpoise.
Either way, it's still a beautiful set up. So used to seeing the Daytonas with the lightning bolts, the all white look is unique.

Charley, if it turns out they way we want, we are going with a spiderman theme front with some "rips" in the side fading/ripping to white or to yellow then white. Hence, the reason for using mostly vinyl, we couldnt decide on a gel/paint job so we want to be able to channge it--both for us and for resale. If youve seen the spiderman nintendo/playstation game box with his eye on it thats essentially the fron--but with 2 eyes and a relection of clouds in them.
Check out my latest post in the reader rides stern drive section.

Craig, I love the white too, and the lightning bolts and too many other ideas, so Im likely going to change it every year or so. I was actually thinking of all white with just a cool asian letter or design on the front but decided to go with something really different. Stay tuned for picks! ( I plan on being able to actually post them here after just 100 more tries--Im a little slow)

Teague was one of the very few willing to do that. He is very confident that it will last 200-300 hours before it even needs to be freshened up, and a lot longer before it needs a rebuild. We will see!

Scoote:
Just walked out the last of the Bucaneer fans from my house.
I am running the 1.36 gear with an estimated 625 HP. I have the single step and have been told the same as Craig. It's supposed to be a few ticks faster than the twin step but does have a mild porpoise at 65-70. I have access to a 2 inch shorter IMCO lower and might try that this coming weekend. I may also try a friends 1.50 drive and give that a try. I did talk to a guy in Havasu over New Years and he picked up 6 mph with a 2 inch lower. Has trouble planing though. I definitely don't want a planing problem and that't why I was wondering what your experience has been.
Any other opinions out there? I was really hoping my HP and Whipple would be a lock for a solid 90. Maybe it just needs more set up??????

Risky, Ive sent an email to mike and geoff to see what they think about your top end. You may want to post a question on eliminator's new boards on their website. They answer questions there fairly quickly. Who set up your drive and prop and are you sure youre getting 625 hp? I suspect that unless youre over propped going to a 1.50 may slow you down. In any event, im sure there are many folks on this board who know a lot more than I, but Im happy to use my boat as a test and give you input. Im getting a 5 blade prop soon and will be going through the same setup trial and error so maybe we can help each other out. Ill post planing time and other info as soon as i get out on the lake.Let me know if I can help or if you need specifics on my boat.

Thanks Scoote:
I didn't know Eliminator had new boards, so I'll have to check them out.
The reason that I may try the 1.50 is that I have a friend who has a 26 Daytona. His original motor was a 540, 550 HP or so. The thing wouldn't do 80 and he thinks it was the 1.36 gears. He has since put in a 900 HP blower motor and sees well over 100.
With my set up and 28 pitch prop I will get 4600 to 5,000 RPM. The thing just really seems to be wind and water sensitive. Weight doesn't seem to be mch of an issue.
Nevertheless, I am going to try one thing at a time. Drive, prop and gears. If all else fails I'll just have to ask the wife to go back to work so I can build a new motor. Yeah right.......

Hey Risky! Try a Blackhawk drive on your boat. I gaurentee you will pick up MPH and maybe even get rid of that porpoise. They're a little quirky around the docks, but a small price to pay for the performance gain. Talk to Lance at Eliminator...

Teague does make a good motor...no doubt .... and a 2 year warranty is impressive assuming you din't pay a whole hell of a lot! Now I'm not trying to plug Larry's Engine and Marine here but Larry is giving me 1 year or 100 hour warranty on my motors included in his original price...I was pleasantly surprised when I heard that!

Risky bizz, get that X dimension up at least 2" from where you have it, you can then go to the 5 blade heiring prop and I swear you'll pick up big mph. I have one customer in AK that has a 25 daytona, 454 mag with SC, 8lbs. of boost and best ever was around 88-90mph, with 2" shorty, 2 pitches bigger 4 blade prop, it ran 98-99mph. If your gimble is not exactly at the rub rail, it's too low for sure, I've worked on a lot of 25's. With the SC, big prop, you'll have no problem with planning, if you do, the 5 blade will get right up. You want to run the 5 blade with a real high x.
Thanks,
Dustin

Thanks MB but I cant take any credit (or blame!). I was going to do something like the 28' skater on the skater website, but my girlfriend talked me into doing something different. So I had a contest for friends, family and coworkers--whomever draws the best design gets a trip to cancun. My nephew came up with the idea, and the guys at Skinz here in dallas ran with it. It is definately different!
We are working with reflective vinyl for the eyes which will really stand out--the regular stuff looks like wet paint its so shiny but the reflective is almost like a mirror. Thank goodness I can take this stuff off.

Yep its 21 right now but its a once in a decade cold front. Normal high for dallas is in the 60's. It's supposed to be 65 this weekend. And because I have not logged 1 hour on the boat, Im anxious to say the least.
Putting the vinyl on was about a 2-3 day job for 2 very very experienced guys. The boat has a lot of subtle curves that require careful aplication. The design took about 20 hours with a very talented guy using photoshop. If you look closely you will see a ton of detail like shadows, highlights, and 3D effects. If you're not wrapping around curved areas its a quick and easy job. They can design and apply flames, bolts, etc in no time.

Vinyl is warranteed for 5 years. Its very thick and actually protects the gel coat. If it rips, which they tell me it wont as long as I dont crash the boat or wear high heals on it, you just cut that piece out and replace it. My job was about 6k, which was about the price for eliminator's upgraded gel coat (which couldnt come close to this design). If you want some tribal flames, bolts or something simple its a lot cheaper. The nicest thing about this is you can do anything you can imagine and try it out on the boat before you are stuck with it. Even then you can change it every year if you want. Ill let you know next year how it holds up to the elemnets.
The guys that did my boat are Skinz. Their number is 800 707 1008. Burl is the boss and Robby is the guy that did my gesign. They use J. Perez to install the vinyl. Let me know if you need deatiled info. I learned a lot about this process and can make it a lot easier for anyone that is considering it.

Thanks for all the nice words. Here are the final pics of the eyes. If anyone is thinking about vinyl, please let me know and Id be happy to tell you what Ive learned. In terms of protection/care, its just soap and water once in a while--no waxing needed! http://www.***boat.net/image_center/data/522/154P2270010-med.JPG

That was an amazing transformation. Keep us posted on how the vinyl holds up. That concept can take a dated boat and bring it into the new millennium. Thanks for sharing the photos.
