Yesterday i noticed my pump seal leaking. Its an e pump and i noticed a few streams of water coming in at around the seal. Will this require pulling the pump or is there an easy way to temp fix it? Im thinking about gooping it up with 5200.

Tighten Up The Packing Seal Alittle,be Carefull Not To Over Do It, It'll Wear Into The Shaft If It Hasn't Already.

Not the packing seal, where the pump is bolted in the boat, that seal.

Whoever Installed Mine Used Some Type Of Putty,i Take It As The Sea Goin Stuff,i Cleaned The Area Good And Siliconed It The Best I Could.it Doesn't Leak Bad But Does Have A Small Trickle, maybe A Cup After 20 Minutes.

I was chasing leaks 2 years ago and was concerend about a hairline crack around the intake on the bottom side. I know I should have reset the intake but was not wanting to do it at that point. I was at our local ace and grabbed some marine putty that comes in a clear plastic tube and is 2 parts. package says will dry/cure under water. One part is rolled inside the other.( I think it was from loctite but not sure) I ground out a shallow groove ( about 3/32" deep) along the crack and used 80 grit to roughen the area next to the groove. I Then mixed up small amounts of the marine putty and filled and smoothing it out. A little bit of spit helped to make it very uniform after about 1/2 an hour. Although not the best I know it is better then silicone sealeant. It needs resetting (33 years old) and I'm sure someone will pipe in with a horror story. The crack has not re-appeared and I do plan to reset it after I get the SWTD project floating. R.B.

What is considered normal leakage around the packing seal? Water dripping every few seconds, something like that?

Possibly a little more time inbetween drips like 15-30 seconds. It might not show up as a drip but as a fine mist under power. When tightening these I would go no more then an 1/8th turn at a time. Run it for awhile and re-inspect. In my limited expierence I found it was easy to tighten too much but not easy to back it off before it starts to "burn" the seals. R.B.

Taylorman's post just reminded me of a possible leak situation on my boat as well. Noticed quite a bit of water in the bilge that normally isn't there. After pumping it out, seemed to be dripping around that area a little more than normal. Thanks for the info.

You said marine tex you get marine tex. So this being the first time i apply large amounts of this stuff. Will i have to come back with a second coat or should i just sand it smooth? Is it hard to sand?

WHY AREN'T YOU FLOWIN IN YOUR SHOE TOO? I USED A CUT OFF TOOL WITH A GASKETS REMOVER DISK TO SHAPE MINE THEN SANDED WITH 80,THEN 300.SPEEDCOATED FROM THERE.NOW THAT LOADER CAME LOOSE, I GET TO DO IT AGAIN.

IT WAS RECOMMENDED TO ME SO I DID IT.BEFORE I BOUGHT MY SHOE KIT I RESEARCHED THE HELL OUTTA OF BEFORE HAND.THE THREADS I FOUND INSTALLS ON HAD DUANES INSTRUCTIONS AND HE RECOMMENDED IT. I BOLTED MY KIT ON,SET THE ANGLE AT 2 DEGREES AND BLENDED IT INTO THE INTAKE.KEPT WITH THE RAMP ANGLE OF THE SHOE,LOOKED REAL NICE TILL THIS WEEKEND.SEARCH FOR A INSTALL THREAD AND YOU'LL SEE WHAT I MEAN.I'LL GO LOOK FOR IT AND REPORT BACK.

HE WAS SEA GOIN PUTTY I THINK, I USED GOOD OLE JB WELD.IT WORKED FINE BUT SAGGED, HAD TO STAY UNDER THE BOAT AND KEEP PUT'N IT BACK IN PLACE.A FRIEND OF MINE WORKS FOR WEIRHAUSER(SP?) AND BROUGHT ME A 2 PART PUTTY THATS REAL THICK,SUPPOSED TO BE HARD TO REMOVE,DRIES AND SANDABLE IN 20 MINUTES,CAN BE FORMED WITHOUT SAGGING.THE HARDNER PART OF THE PUTTY SMOKES WHEN IT HITS THE AIR!!GONNA BE WEARING SOME GOOD GLOVES WHEN I DO IT AGAIN.

Is there a difference in Marine Tex and Sea going putty? Is one easier to sand than the other? I just went to the hardware store to buy some sandpaper and some better putty knives. Gonna do some more work on it tonight.

One more question. To put additional layers of marine tex on, will it adhere good to the layer thats there now. I assume it needs to be roughed up with sandpaper and then additional marine tex should stick good.

this stuff will bond to it self. i always shape it while it is drying.i put it on as smooth as possable then when its a little dryer i'll push out the highs with my fingers.get it as close as possable before it cures. then start sanding with a 60 or 80 grit. preferably with a da or disk sander. then 220 grit sometimes upto a 400 grit. i have also shaped it up to my shoe. this stuff will bond to anything! on the box "marine-tex" claimes--sands like wood, hardens like steel. you can even use a rasp to shape it. i love this stuff.
good luck!!!

Just finished putting a second coat. I set the shoe in marine tex and smoothed around it. I still have the area on the sides were the insert meets the hull to build up. I guess its looking a little better than last the first coat but it still looks like sh*t. That stuff is hard to lay smooth.

Reading through this all and man I guess I will need to really inspect all my pump stuff.
Here's my question. I am getting a trickle on the inside where the shaft comes through the pump right before the deal with the two bolts. It's just a trickle but is this normal? I tried tightening the two nuts but they are pretty tight already so I didnt wanna break/strip.

A TRICKLE IS NORMAL, DON'T KEEP TIGHTENING THE PACKING SEAL,IT'LL MELT AND WEAR INTO THE SHAFT ALITTLE.IF IT GOES TO GUSHING,TIME FOR NEW SEALS.I PERSONALLY HAVE NEVER SEEN A JET THAT DOESN'T LEAK ALITTLE.

Hey Thomas, did you fill in the area i have circled here. Its the big hump where the pump meets the fiberglass. Looks like its gonna take alot of filling to get it smooth.

Im obsessed. 4th coat at lunch. I think one more good coat will about get it. It may need a last light coat after that and a good sanding. Hey impatient1, did you sand the cast flash off the pump all the way up to the impeller before you speed coated it?

I have a slight crack along one side of my intake and it was dripping out water. I found a bolt on the top side that was like half way screwed in and I start tightening it and it seems to be pushing a hole into the side of my intake, odd. Needless to say I stopped trying to tighten it lol

Yeah RIO, I figured out it was something like that before I did to much damage. I made a crack, I used some marine epoxy to sort of seal it and took it out yesterday, was taking on a very small amount of water, nothing my bilge pump couldnt handle.
I prolly just need to rebuild my pump and intake redone anyhow. I am very sure it has never been touched. Hell, prolly need to do the entire boat eventually! INCL Engine, hull work, interior, paint, trailor, every damn thing. lol
