So I pulled the fuel tanks to polish, and as I remove the first one I hear a rattle. Come to find out the pick up tube fell out of the fitting. Just wondering what's supposed to hold it into the fitting (silicone, etc), because I'm pretty sure gas will eat silicone.
I'll post pics later when I get home but thought I'd pick your brains.

if ur referring to the tube that comes out of the tank where ur fuel hose hooks too...there should be a fitting that is welded to the tank...so that u can either screw a short piece of pipe into for the hose to slip over or a fitting that u can screw a AN fitting into for SS lines...if thats the case...just mig weld the fitting bk in & use a pipe/an fitting for the hose

Funny you should mention this.
On Saturday our patrol boat (22' Whaler w/225 Optimax) just quit running. This happened last week too, but we thought it was a filter problem, and the boat ran fine after a new filter and full tank of gas.
When the same thing happened on Saturday, I noticed it stalled at the same gas gauge reading as before.
Pulled the supply fitting out of the tank and the pick-up tube had fallen off. Because of the tank's angle in the boat, it drew fuel straight through the fitting, even without the tube, until about 1/4 tank was burned off, then lost suction. 120 gallon tank.
Luckily, the tank was set up for dual engines, and had a second pick up. We just swapped the hose, and were on our way.
Back to your original question.
The fittting was aluminum with the copper pick-up tube soldered into it.

i suppose every1's tanks are different...mine have a slight angle to the bottom rear (2 side tanks) which gravity feed/flow into a T & then on to the filter & pump...i have AN fittings that allow USCG hose to be hooked up to them...i have never had a prob

When i went through my boat the pickups were way to small to supply enough fuel so i cut off the tubes drilled out the fittings and brazed in a larger pieace of copper. The O.D. Still has threads so you can insert the fitting and tube into the tank then tighten it down. So far so good.. 3 years later it's still working.

Brass ferrule in there maybe?
Doesn't look like a compression type fitting, but they must have had something.

i had smokin hell with my tanks  pick ups were to frewakin small and had a check ball which i do not need pulled'em out and since i hadem i took em to the car wash and washed and rinsed alot!! it gotem pretty clean. and heres how i fixed the pickups for good.
take a stainless pipe to tubing fitting along with some stainless tubing, it looks like you have 3/8'' which should be plenty big drill out the fitting picking a drillbit that will not get into the beveled edge on the tubing side but will drill out the center so you can push the tubing thru it set it about 1'' from the bottom of your tank and cut to fit do not tighten up on the ferrel nut till your sure of where you want it because once you tighten it its locked in place and use a good thread sealent on the bung threads its pretty easy to do and worked perfect no leaks and the stainless will out last the tanks run a filter between the tanks and pump i clamped on rubber hose to a canister style filter and then you can chose your fittings from there hope this helps you.
you'll need tubing cutters and benders.

that sounds like a good idea. my tanks were the same as you pictured.. I ditched the 1/4 to 3/8 reducer and got a 3/8 90.. drilled it out to fit the tube and brazed it as i said above. just make sure to keep the threads clear and clean so they thread in easy.
