I have a morse 33c red cable and it measures 10 foot from tip to tip...The housing is actually about 8 1/2 foot long. The housing is marked/stamped 10 ft.

I just ordered a teleflex cable and I measured just the casing. Also, your old cable should have a part number on it. The last 2 digits should be the length.
My 21 foot boat required a 19 ft cable.

I just ordered a rack and was told to measure from the centre of the steering shaft to the end of the cable. Got it home and it was exactly the same as the old cable. just my .02

I took my boat right to LakeLand marine and actually took the cables out of the box to be SURE they would be the correct length.

The cable should have the length on it, as long as the old cable is the exact length you want it you can use that measurment. In my case i pulled my old cable out so long ago that when i ordered a new one the first time i realized when installing the new cable that it was way too long... It was the same length as the old one but apparently whoever installed the steering in it originaly must have stolen it from larger boat.
