Alternate stringers?

I just aquired an old Jetboat and when I got it home and started checking it looks like the Stringers are rotted away pretty good. Besides wood, has anyone replaced their stringers with anything else, I am thinking aluminum channel, "I" beam or a rectangular tube might be an option.

From what little I know, I think we use wood because the resin actually soaks into the wood. Otherwise its an ok idea :)
