I have to admit that I was a bit apprehensive about it, but went ahead and signed up as a Rep and also for the service. Low and behold, I received my VoIP box tonight that took me all of 2 mins. to hook up and I started to make calls all over god's creation. This thing is slicker than snot !!!!!!!!!!
$29.95 a month get's you UNLIMITED calls to U.S., Canada and 20 other countries, along with all your typical voicemail, forwarding, blocking, etc..
You can take the small box with you anywhere in the world and place and receive calls on your local number
I also called my new VoIp # from my soon to be gone Verizon home phone, and I had an e-mail within 4 seconds with my voice message I left for myself in a .wav file that I played back instantly :rollside:

I have had Vonage for over 5 months. Overall I like it better then traditional phone service due to pricing and features baked in, but I would have to say it is not as reliable as traditional phone service. It is only as reliable as your internet and local area network within your house....I would say it is very reliable, just not as reliable as traditional phone service. I have had a least 1 incident a month where I pick it up, don't have dial tone, and need to reset the cable modem, wireless router/ap, and phone hub and its fixed.
In addition, you need more cat 5 connections or to bridge it via wireless access points if you want to utilize Pay Per View on demand via your dish or direct network. Right now, I have one phone down stairs where I have a dedicated cat 5 connection, and then a wireless slave phone unit upstairs. So all of the built in phone connections that come with your house may not work and then you cannot plug in your dish or direct boxes to your phone jacks...
Definitely a better option, but some things to think about cause it is easy to plug it in and get one phone up and running, but a number of items to think about.

I looked at that site when you sent it. I have a couple of guys that work for me out of state and we us VOIP and have not had the best Luck. Latency issues are a bitc$. Sometime I can understand them and they need to stop downloading or sending files. They still need some kinks worked out of it. :crossx:
Im sure I will be signing up for that on my next insurance renewal!
Its a bundle thing!

I agree, but I would say availability/uptime with the phone is 98+%......versus 99.9 on the traditional line phone...
1% is a lot for a large call center at my work, but not for a residential phone.....that is unless you are trying to call 911 and the phone is down.......but that is what you have a contingency (cell) for.

I think this is more of a business use issue.
Most home users aren't transferring big files or viewing videos while talking on the phone.... or are they??
At least when it is a home user, it's easy enough to figure out who's using all the bandwidth...
It's all in the prioritization.

Unless you are running a business from the house or you have a kid that is downloading all of the Bearshare Porn each night, I don't think most residents will have an issue.
Also, it depends on well your VOIP carrier handles quality of service to deal with latency issues within the WAN or LAN.

On that money back guarantee - do you still get stuck with a setup fee?

You Like? $400k and it can be yours. The trialer has a motor in it so you can unhook it and drive it to were you want to store it.

NO setup fee, but a 1 time activation that I would refund if they didn't

You may want to check with your local ISP, you may find that they don't even have QOS (quality of service) running, if it is not enabled you will all ways have voice quality issues.
This is a big issue with most ISP's because there main concern is data not voice.

I have Adelphia (ISP) and everyone I called had no idea I was calling on my VoIP phone and they said it sounded clear as a bell

I cancelled all service to my house. I don't have a phone(wife and I have cell phones) and I no longer have internet access since I cancelled all my cable service(tv and internet).
I'm living in the stoneage these days. Have to come to work just to look at the internet.

I just recieved Vonage a few days ago...I pay $24.95 a month for unlimited calling within the US, and an extra 5 bucks a month for an 800# pretty cool for my out of state calls. I work out of my house and wanted a dedicated business line....we'll see how it works!!

Good point, I will check with Adelphia Cable on the provisions for QOS....not that a consumer customer is going to drive them to change, but maybe if they get enough complaints.....I have only had a dropped call problem maybe twice within 5 months......

How is that 800 line working? Can you access incoming telephone logs on a real-time basis? And is it a true 800 number, where caller ID is nabbed even if caller ID is blocked? Need to test that? Thanks
