I have a bbc engine with a casting number of 399289 and was told that it was a 427. However, I have been to several engine sites that say that it can also be a 454.
The pistons are TRW forged Part# "L2239NF .30" and the crank has a part # of "6223". Is there a way to tell which one it is?

All depends on the stroke. The bore is the same between the 454 and the 427. Accoring to Mortec.com it is a 454. But if the motor was ever apart, a 427 crank could have been put in to it with no major issues.
427 = 4.250" x 3.76"
454 = 4.250" x 4.00"

Jordy :D I am going by the casting list index book for BB Chevys.
Note- LOL...it does say that block casting numbers aren't 100% reliable..WTF! Right on the index of the book.....So why did I buy it then???? HHHmmmmm LOL...
But yeah you are right, its the same block, different stroke....Thanks Jordy
