I have a 496 and I am just looking for some input. This is the first Mercury engine I have dealt with so I am a little ignorant on the 496!
I am looking for common oil preassure at idle, aswell as at top RPM 4800 or so....
I am currently around 22-25 psi at idle and 50ish at 4800RPM...
Any input would be appreciated.

I hear it reads much better when it's filled up to the full mark on the dipstick. Oh, and even better when the shifter is in neutral and the engine starts. :D :D :D

Can't tell you the exact pressure at idle without looking at my boat. I just know if something doesn't look right. As far as the RPM yes 4400-4800. This link will help a little.

Unfortunately that site doesn't help much and everyone I ask has a different answer. Thanks for the help though voodoo :)

If your at 4800rpm now, with the heat on, you sound like you have it propped right, and the oil pressure sounds good too.

Mine is about 20-25 psi at idle, and around 45 cruising. Since I am running 10-30 M1, I think that is just fine. That's about all the pressure one could expect from a stocker.

Beer-30, I'm surprised your only ruuning 10-30, in the summer heat. After a long run, when you build some heat, you don't see a dropoff of pressure?
I hear the Mobil 1 15-50 EP is good stuff.

Nope, Not really. With an oil cooler, you generally have pretty stable temp - especially "low" HP engines. After a WOT run from Springs back to the Channel, it is just slightly above 20 @idle. It only takes 7 lbs or so to run a motor, so the rest is HP loss from driving the pump anyway. I wouldn't expect much more pressure out of a stocker anyway. These motors are know for low psi. The 10-30 seems fine in there.

AZJD, per the Mercury manual, specs for oil pressure are:
Minimum 30 psi @ 2000rpm
Minimum 15 psi @ idle
Rpm range WOT is 4600-5000
So, you are fine.

Yeah, even with straight fitty in it, I wouldn't expect much more. :)

Thanks alot guys, I noticed a big difference in the preassure yesterday due to increased heat from the previous weekend.....I can see how 20deg increase in air temp effects it, eases my mind to see how much that gauge moves with just a little temp change.....
