Started out looking at 650 dual sport's, then 1000 Adventure bikes, but decided on an '06 FJR1300 Yamaha. Any other bikers here?

lakewake-Those are nice bikes man. I still have a lot of "go fast" in me, and this was a good compromise. Last bike was a V-Max, and I am addicted to acceleration(where prudent) ;)

1979 Shovel and 4 banger trany (I built/painted) in a 1985 OE Softtail frame I did back in 1988.
Bike pretty much looks the same except now it's a 88" 1540cc JE 3+5/8 bore 10.50:1 S&S rods, dual plug heads/worked, Crane single fire ign with a Dellorto DHLA- 40 hanging off the side.

RRM- I see you have a WR450 in your sig. How do you like it? I had one of the early yzf426's. That fokking kickstarter put holes in all my boots. Foot was black and blue.. Always wanted to get one of the electric start WR450's, great trail bike and the 5 speed too.

Love my WR450. Got a 1000 dirt miles on it so far and not one problem. It was quite chocked up from the factory due to emissions but after doing about 5 free mods, it runs hard! I put a FMF powercore exhaust on it and I'll tell you if your not careful it will pull your arms out of the sockets. It has about 43 HP, and the electric start work awesome!

fjr is superb.. with the shaft drive, fuel injection, 140 hp, and all the comfort features. I rode a cbr1100xx and can attest to the benefits the fjr has to offer. few things in life clear your mind like a little time at 195.
the fjr is about ready for an upgrade, so you may want to find out if that is in the near future.
as for HD... I've heard they have WWII technology. people that say that must be referring to the tires, oil, etc because the motor came out the same year as my colt... 1911! the hd is really about a way of life and will be much cheaper in a couple of years as the average age buyer of a new hd is 46 and the buyers will be trading 'em in for travel trailers, oxygen bottles, and wheel chairs soon enough. all that black clothing, ice cream, and "acting" tuff has precious little to do with biking.
bmw is outstanding and expensive. they have a new bike but few can compare with the fjr!
Best of luck and be careful.. according to the national safety foundation, you are 16 times more likely to be seriously injured (substantial risk of death) than in a car! got out of the bike business and got a boat after 60,000 miles and funerals and ICU visits. but I keep the leathers and other gear because you never know when the adrenaline addiction will reclaim her slave!
funny thing, as dangerous as bikes are.. in Tennessee more people are killed every year crossing the street than on bikes.
keep it up! also, don't tell a guy that rides at triple digits to be careful... tell him he better be right!

I had an 86 FJ1200 for a while. That bike, after 50,000 heavily abused miles, burning oil, and running very rich from a pipe it wasn't jetted for, still laid down 115HP on the dyno! Still dead reliable when I sold it too. I sold it to a kid who was going to turn it into a drag bike with the addition of twin turbos and nitrous. He was going to send pics when it was finished. I'm assuming that kid has since met a violent and tragic death, because I never heard from him again. :crossx: Anyway, it looks like maybe Yamaha added some exciting new features like brakes and handling to the newer FJ since then. Looks like a good time anyway. Have fun with it and be safe. :)

I sure loved mine.
Sold it when I broke my arm and wasn't able to ride for a LONG time. I'll likely get another in a year or so.
I bought an '03. First year. Dead nuts reliable. There are stories of knocking , but Yammi seems to be repairing any bikes that have the prob. Seems like it was about 5 percent on early models. There was some excessive valve guide wear.

If any of you need a new one, I work at Harley Davidson in Henderson NV. I am the senior sales person there and will make sure you get a good deal. If you refer anyone to me, I will spiff you a 100.00 towards the store as well.
BTW, I was reading up on that Duc the day before yesterday when it was released to the public. It is sooooo insane. We used to be Ducati dealer but it just wasnt making us any money. I was bummed when we dropped them.

I don't think you are going to find anything as fast as this thing. This bike has a 4 cylinder engine with 200hp......Suzuki aint touching that! All the body parts are carbon fiber, the brembo carbon brakes, ohlins 43mm forks, racing exhaust, and a ton of magnesium parts.......
Its pricey but it's nice. If you got the money!

Speed is not really the purpose of the new Duc. Sure a 200hp bike will easily hit 186 mph, which is the max speed that a Euro and United States street bikes are black boxed at. For any normal person this is more bike than any person will ever use. In fact I am sure that this bike will ride like crap on the street. Now on the track this bike will send you to a new world if you know how to ride. But who wants to be responsible for crashing a 65K dollar bike.

I would love to ride that thing.........not on the street though I agree. These bike will sell immidiately to Ducati collectors and rappers with too much money and not enough sense.
Take into consideration, how much less that bike weighs than your run of the mill 1000cc........that thing has to be a rocketship!
