So my daughter had this question in her homework and it made me think
Q: You have 2 coins that total 15 cents but one is not a nickel.
What are the 2 coins?
Anyone else have some brain teasers?

Three guys check in to a motel. The cost of the room is $30 so they each chip in $10 and go to their room. The manager then decides to give them a discount of $5. He takes 5 ones from the register and hands them to the bellman and tells him to take the refund to the room. On the way the bellman decides to pocket $2 for himself. He gives $1 to each of the three men. So now each man has contributed $9 for the room and the bellman has $2. What happened to the last dollar?

TheLurker
06-06-2006, 05:20 PM
$30.00 - $5.00 = $25.00
$25.00 devided by 3 = $8.33
The 3 guys each paid $10.00 minus the $1.00 that the bell hop gave back
=$9.00
$9.00 - $8.33 = $0.66 A portion of the missing dollar is in here
$0.66 x 3 = $1.98 The $2.00 the bell hop kept

I had to use 120 of my 165 IQ points on that one.

What if your in the liquor store and there is a give a penny, take a penny tray. That would blow your whole theory. Youd be able to make 99 cents with your 3 quarters, 2 of your dimes all 4 of your pennies and one out of the tray. Hell I'd take two pennies and make a cent on the transaction. :D

Okay here's one. Police find a guy hanging by his neck. His feet were nearly 2 feet off the ground. He has one end of a rope tied to a 10 ft high beam in the center of the room. The other end is around his neck. Other than a very wet floor, there is nothing in the room. There are no windows, and the only door was locked from the inside.
The cops rule it a suicide. What did he use to tie the end of the rope to the beam?

By the way, I disagree. Because with a palindrome, you reverse the order of the letters. For your riddle to work, you must reverse the letters themselves.

A boy was at a carnival and went to a booth where a man said to the boy, "If I write your exact weight on this piece of paper then you have to give me $50, but if I cannot, I will pay you $50."
The boy looked around and saw no scale so he agrees, thinking no matter what the carny writes he'll just say he weighs more or less.
In the end the boy ended up paying the man $50. How did the man win the bet?

Did he write " your exact weight"?
There are three bags of M&M's, they are sorted by color. One bag has all red, another yellow, and the last green. The bags are all missed labeled. You can only look in one bag, how do you know what bag contains what color.

Hmmm on further ponderance since it's not clear bags :D I'm gonna say process of elimination. The other two bags are mislabelled. Knowing just one color will sort out what the other two are knowing they have wrong labels.

Yes... Actually this brainteaser was one that Microsoft asked during their interview process at my college back in the day....
One more then I am done.
There are three light bulbs in one room that has no windows and one door that is closed. In another room there are three light switches. You may enter the room with the lights only once, you cannot see from one room to the other and you are alone. how do you know what switch turns what light on?

Flip two switches and wait a few minutes. Turn one switch off. Go into the other room. The light that is on is the switch you left on. Out of the two that are off.... The one that is warm is the one you turned on and then off after a few minutes and the last one is the one you never touched.

This one took me a while, good one. I think you will have to use the heat of the light bulbs to figure this out. Let me know. I would leave the first switch off. The second one I would turn on for a few minutes. Then before I entered the room I would turn off the second one and turn on the third one. The light thats is on would be the third switch and the one that is warm to touch is the second one and the cool light that is off is the first one. Right?

3 men will be call them x, y, and z
bellman will be b
manager will be called m
x=10
y=10
z=10
b=0 (the key to the math problem)
m= 30
x+y+z= the 3 men
x+y+z+b=m
(x)+(y)+(z)-(b+5)=m-(b+5) manager gives bellboy $5 (subtract $5 from each side)
(x+1)+(y+1)+(z+1)-(b+5)-(3)=30-(b+5) Bell boy gives back 1 dollar to the 3 men. (subtract 3 dollars from bell boy)
(10+1)+(10+1)+(10+1)-(0+5)-(3)=30-(0+5)
(11)+(11)+(11)-(5)-(3)=30-5
33+(-8)=25
(33-8)=25
25=25
Can someone check my math, probably your 14 year old could figure this out.
Stay in school :rollside:
The room cost $25 the bell men took $2 = $27
$9x3=$27
Want to play poker too??? :) :) :)
