just cant seem to get excited about going to the river this season. to many people doing stupid siht and hurting other people. seems like it is really getting off to a bad start this summer. I have been goin there for a long time and this is the first time that I am actually thinking about calling it quits. I know that people have been doing stupid siht out there forever and winning the darwin award but it seems like there sharing there coveted prize with innocents alot more often than ever. I quit going to glamis about 7 or 8 years ago for this same reason, went out there last year and it was a totally different place than one I used to love. Im starting to get the same vibe at the river just to many people who seem to have no respect. I wonder how many more weekend fatalitys will occur before they just shut the whole thing down. i guess im just pissed off that another place i really enjoy spending my time is goin to siht.

Try the southern part of the river. Down by Martinez/Fishers.
Plenty of sandbars to find the atmosphere you like. We started at the main sandbar, then as we had kids, we started go farther up river. The farther up towards Picacho you go the mellower it gets. I've gone about 5 or so miles past Picacho on Memorial Day weekends and found a private sandbar to ourselves.
The power drinkers and rowdies tend to stay down river at the main sandbar. I think the police there call it Zoo Island.
We'll be out Father's Day weekend. Give it a try. If you haven't been there before, you'll get hooked again.
It does get shallow there. So if you don't have a jet, follow someone.

My wife likes the hotel thing, so we go to the Microtel off Fortuna Road. It is a nice hotel about 30 mins away. It has a large well lit lot for the boat. Many boaters there in the summer. There are all the esentials right there. Gas, food, grocery store all within walking distance.
Some rent houses on the lake or trailers close to the water. If you don't mind camping, you could do that, and there are places there for motorhomes.
Here is a website with some info.

Yep, there it is, mid week, no holiday weekends or days near holiday weekends.
I'd never put my kids on the water those days either.
Avoid Katherns and that section of Mojave any time of summer, Laughlin by the casinos, Sandbar at Havasu any day.

Take a few extra gas cans, somthing to eat and go explore. I have gone to many lakes on lots of holiday weekends and there is always somewhere to get away from it all. IT is always easier to find the big crowd than the nice out of the way spot. There are some places on Lake Mead that I would be hard pressed to find another boat on a 3 dayer. Go look and leave the idiots behind

Like others have said, go during the week or during the non holiday weekends. We stop going the holiday weekends once we started having kids, to many punks and it is just not worth all the trouble.

Stiil have River Fever, and look forward to every trip out. Sure things have changed, just look at the traffic and congestion around where you live. Just accept the change, adapt, and have a great time with what's there. It's still good :rollside:

There is no such thing as river burnout. :rollside: You just need a good fun filled weekend out their with old friends and new ones to make you remember why you started going to the river in the first place. :)
Did you sell your boat?
Maybe an unofficial stoker regatta would put you back in the proper river mindset?? :)

When there are too many people on Havi I stay on the south side of the lake between Steamboat and the Dam. The other people down there are doing the same thing. Families getting away from the idiots. There is also a huge float cove down there where families go and hang out. Haven't seen an idiot yet.

The south is where it it. You get away from the idots and meet cool people doing the same thing. We started at the Sandbar last weekend on our first day. I hated it for the first time in 18 yrs. Went to steamboat the next day and everyone had a blast. Tied up with 6 boats and got to really relax and enjoy ourselves.

i understand your feelings.. been going to Havasu for over 20 years but you couldn't pay me to go out on the weekends.. or especially any big weekend anymore. we prefer the quieter monday-thursday trips, which is something we started doing a few years back, It just makes for a more relaxed time. :boxed:

Would this be a cove past the dam on the CA side with a palm and a road above? I hung out in this cove for the first time last weekend, and it was great, family oriented, quiet and a lot of room to swim, the kids and wife loved it.

I think you are referring to Gene's Wash. A narrow inlet that has an island towards the back. It's pretty nice in there and drama free until a pwc'er buzzes in there making a wake.

Somebody told me it was Palm Cove, or something like that. It was not narrow though, it was wider than Coper and when you got to a certain point, you had to make a right and then a left and the cove would keep going. If you kept going then it would start getting narrow. There was a big rock where people were jumping off though. I really need to get a map with all the cove names.

Yes it is just past the Intake. It is called Gene's Wash Cove. If somebody said Palm Cove that is probably there own name for it but it is actually called Gene's Wash Cove. The only thing that sucks about it is that there are no sandy beaches. And it sucks if a PWC buzzes in but I'll yell at them if their being idiots.

Cool, now I have the actual name for it then. And yes, there are no sandy beaches, all cliff in there. You know of any nice coves with sandy beaches on the south side? The kids would really like that.

Dosen't that just fry your butt  What is so hard to see, all boats take it easy but not PWC's, they seem to not realize they are makin a big wake even going around 7-8 MPH. Do they just not give a f--k? Or are they that STUPID  I think its the latter and the restrictions being placed on them are not coming fast enough for me :yuk: NSF

Palm Tree Cove is off the south side of Skier's Island (Cove just north of Copper Canyon). A private, seldom visited cove with a little island toward the back. On the island, there is a little palm tree that someone keeps nice and trimmed.

I agree, and river burnout happens. I got tired of the drive and the crowds and stopped going two years ago. I have been going to the river since I was a kid. Go with the right people, on your same level of $$, partying and boating and you will have a great time again. Go when most don't go. I still go a couple of times a year with a good friend of mine and we always have a blast. I stopped going and bought a ocean boat, if I want to go boating and don't want to tow for 4 plus plus hours I just run to Catalina for lunch. No crowds on the water and long distances to run my boat for. If I was to do the river again (and Im thinking about it) I would only do it if all of my stuff was there and I took a plane out. The drive just wears you down, in a plane it takes about two hours or less depending on winds. It is the only way to go.

Great, now we'll out run out and buy planes. Then we'll complain about how crowded the sky's are getting, and how long it takes to get clearance to take off and land.
When will the insanity end :rollside:

The drive does wear on one. I am just glad I don't have to tow my boat out there, that alone makes it easier to drive out there.

It is the constant drama that seems to be at the river with people I go with, all I want to do is go to Road Runners and the sandbar. God forbid that the men might have some fun.
Plus the drama when someone does something stupid like panic when they are in the water, don’t get in the water if you can’t relax and float instead of fighting the currant and tiring yourself out. I think I may have to make a grown man ware a life vest with the rest of the kids.
It’s the drama that is making me think about getting off the river. If I want drama I will go to work.

No on Havasu if you want Sandy beaches you have to go up river. There are some nice ones past the gorge if you get to them early enough. Otherwise on the Arizona side of the lake just past Cattail there are some beaches but there are rocks that vary in size depending on the beach. Only thing is that they are day use. Some are State beach so if you have an annual pass to Cattail/Windsor then you can use it without extra pay. Some are BLM. You can pay the 10 bucks or you can go to the BLM office and get an annual pass for like 30 bucks or so. That works for Steamboat too. Speaking of Steamboat it is sandy but is full of the less rowdy partiers.

Be careful of your prop going in there. There are the big fish hotels in there. Probably okay right now but when the water drops in the fall I would be skeered.

I bought my boat with the warren buffet theory "if its good enough to buy its good enough to keep".

Never been fast on the ocean and i really cant wait to step it up a notch when the time is right. we charter sail boats through a sailing club and go over to catalina a few times a year. As far as the drive to the river I kind of enjoy it but I dont trailer the boat that would get old real quick.
