What do you peeps suggest one have on his vessel prior to going on a search for Davey Jones' Locker? I know there have been a couple of threads regarding this topic. But, I couldnt locate one. I am taking my boat out in July and want to be prepared/ coast guard approved. Thanks.

The threads about this were made in Hot Spots West. Did you search there?
I always recommend a fire extinguisher.

Float plan (don't venture out on the ocean without leaving a detailed float plan with a non-drunken person on land :boxed: )

This is great and boating is always better with friends. Float plan so someone knows where and when you are to be at places. The ocean is great but you must always remember that it will take some time before you get help should you need it.
I also suggest you make sure your vessel is serviced and as dependable a possible. First aid kit should always be on your boat anyway. Oh yea did I mention do not go alone you just never know what will happen.

Take into consideration that the ocean usually gets more rough in the afternoon. Don't venture out too far from safety. Could get real rough on the way home. Also watch out for the fog, it can roll in at any time. Check the small craft advisory before you go out. Have a good trip.

I have spent alot of time in the ocean as a boat owner, with the items listed above, take a US Power squadron course they are dirt cheap and you will learn things that will give you mucho confidence in the bog blue. You must have a good radio, a gps is advisable, and of course vessel assist. Get a good compass and a laminated sheet of course settings from landmarks for instance from Avalon if you want to go to say Newport or Alamitos Bay you would have the course setting.

A few items have been missed before now. They're easy items so don't go unprepared.
- wine bottle with cork
- piece of paper
- pencil
