What brand is the best? What brand should you stay away from? We are going to buy one and are just curious about cost and reliablilty. We are just looking for an at home model. Thanks, Nick

It,s easier to rent a stanley steamer at the local supermarket.

I looked into that but our kids constantly spill stuff and track stuff in the house that I would have to rent one everyday to keep up. I am guessing a decent machine is about 2-4 hundred dollars. It costs about 40 to rent one for a day with all the cleaning stuff.

We own a rainbow vacuum cleaner with all the bells and whistles, which can be used for carpet cleaning. It is very expensive brand new and used can still cost you 600.00.

I've got a Bissel. Real easy to hit the messes that the kids and dogs make. Mine's a few years old, and still works like new. Has the hose for upholstery and small jobs.
If I were to get a new one, It'd be the new Bissel model with the rotating brush.

I would have to second this. Bissel makes a fine carpet cleaner. They even have the hose that has the part to do cars. Real nice.

My mother just paid $1,100 for a Kurby Diamond. It is a vac and all. I suggest you check it out. It is amazing what that thing picked up compared to our hoover! It will shampoo too.

I like my Hover. It's close to 10 years old. I've never compared other models.

We like ours also, but most people are not willing to put out that kinda cash for a vacuum unless they have used it before.

Any time you clean carpet you have got te reapply Scotch-Gard. Cleaning strips the carpet and it will get dirty again in a fraction of the time. Even if its just a small spot you clean by hand. Buy some cans of scotch-gard and keep it around. The stuff works. Just my .02

Agree 100%. I bought mine back in 1988 when they were about $1000. Would never imagined spending that kind of money on a vacuum cleaner until saw what it could do.

We purchased ours in the mid 90's and paid 2100.00. I still can't believe I paid that much for a vacuum. We bought a used one for the Havasu house and paid 600.00

I purchased the Hoover Steam Vac Dual V with rinse, it was rated the best one on comsumer reports, it said it came the closest to pro cleaners. I has paid for itself time and time again, this thing really works.

Brian, where did you get it at? I have heard alot of good things about bissell. How much do the chemicals cost and how often do you have to replace them?

Nick,
Rikki picked it up from walmart a few months back. The chemicals are about $20.00 a gallon and lasts a couple cleanings of our house that is about the same size as your river pad...
Nick, Click here for the one we have... (http://www.bissell.com/Products/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=Bissell&category%5Fname=UprightDeepCleaner&product%5Fid=PROheat+Upright+Deep+Cleaner)

Just as an FYI, some carpet mfgs. will void your warranty if they find out you used a portable (not truck mounted) carpet cleaning machine on your carpet and most require that you have your carpet proffessionally steam cleaned every 12-18 months, not telling not to use one of the ones suggested just thought you should know so you wouldn't be suprised down the road.
