what ron said.
shims give you flexibility. sand or grind your shims so there is a smoother transition. i'd prefer the thinner shoe which allows me to go up or down depending on conditions, 0.010 or 0.030 at a time. it's not like a certain depth is the end all...

BP
What variables do you use to determine shoe depth for one set-up to the next?

suction pressure that will stay in a reasonable range throughout the speed range without spiking down or dropping significantly.
lacking suction pressure, if the boat feels like you slammed on the brakes and raises you out of the seat when you let off from top speed, it's probably deeper than it needs to be. take 030 out, try again. from top speed, if the boat just goes to idle and slides forward with no resistance, it's probably too shallow.. add 030 and try again.
if you have an A or AA impeller, boat has a great holeshot, but the engine's turning 6400 at 90, it's very possible that suction pressure is too low; add 030 and try again until the rpm/speed is reasonable.
you can see that, without any pump performance information, there is a lot of testing involved to find the correct depth for a specific boat.
water conditions (temp, hardness, dissolved solid content) can also affect pump performance, i.e., suction pressure at a given speed. with hi dissolved solids, take 030 out and try that. with warm water, add 030 and try it.
of course, it's necessary to work with a decent loader.
