Thinking about buying a 2002 Yamaha Road Star from a friend, well maintained, but high miles, 54,000. Only $5,000 Any experience with this bike, how many miles 'till she dies? Should I do it, or keep looking? Mike

I think that you would be able to find one with alot less miles for just a little more...that is a ton of miles. What do they cost brand new???

The owner of the bike said to expect 90 - 100K miles before needing major work. If THAT is true, it might be a good deal........

If that's the V4 1200 cc engine they are bulletproof. It was derrived from the V-Max engine and is basically a detuned version. You will have to go through the valves 3 or 4 times between now and 100,000 miles but that's about it.
I have had my V-Max for 4 years now and have had to do nothing to it and I ride ALOT...

I had an 03 midnight star and customized it, they are very reliable bike, but I would not buy a bike with that many miles. I would buy my Bourget instead only 1500 miles :p

...yup, the high miliage scares me, however, I am getting back into riding and the cheap pricetag along with a fully dressed bike is apealing. If I could get 4 years out of it (@10K per year) I would get my moneys worth. I used to commute on bike, this will be a weekender....take a look at the pic, 5,000, no tax is cheap IF the bike will last. Mike

That's a lot of miles for any bike except a BMW. I would guess you can expect to be putting some $$ into it soon.
