2006 Idaho Regatta wraps up
By MARK JONES/South Idaho Press
Monday, June 26, 2006 12:40 PM CDT
An important lesson came out of the 31st annual Burger King Idaho Regatta — always give it your best shot.
Steve Tustison and Jeff Hansen (P-74) did exactly that during the Crackerbox finals on Saturday, and as a result the pair walked away with the Bill Faulkner Sr. and Lance Faulkner Memorial Trophy and Moyle Mink as announced at the Burger King Idaho Regatta Banquet held Sunday evening at the Burley Inn Convention Center.
“I can’t tell you how great this is,” Tustison said.
The RegattaÂ’s top prize goes to the driver in the Regatta who either breaks or comes the closest to courseÂ’s American Power Boat AssociationÂ’s mile-and-a-quarter record for his or her particular boat.
Tustison and Hansen came within 97 percent of the classificationÂ’s record for the course.
Tustison isnÂ’t a stranger to the winnerÂ’s circle at the Regatta, having won it previously in 1990 and 1995.
And this one means just as much to Tustison as the previous two do.
“I can’t answer that,” he said. “You can’t rank them. The first one was like ‘wow, the people are friendly here’. The second was like the ‘first one wasn’t a fluke.’ And this is like ‘I still have it.’”
Tustison, a resident of San Juan Capistrano, Calif., has been a regular at the Idaho Regatta since 1990. Every year he attends the event, he usually gives his boat a good workout in at least one heat.
“I figure to give my boat a real good go in one of my heats, and that was probably it,” he said following Saturday’s final. “And if it isn’t good enough, I don’t need it.”
All three of TustisonÂ’s Regatta victories have come in the same boat, which prior to this weekend he was considering putting up for sale.
“I’ve got other things I want to do,” Tustison said. “But I will have to think about it now.”
Also at the banquet Sunday night, Danny Loveless, owner of PS-74 and SS-741, was awarded with a Lifetime Achievement Award for more than 30 years of service to the sport. He is stepping away from competitive racing this year.
“I don’t know what to say about an award like this,” Loveless said to the audience. “I wasn’t expecting it. I appreciate this award and am thankful of you guys for thinking of me.”
Notes: A total of 68 boats registered for racing this weekend, which is among the most ever at one Idaho Regatta. No crashes took place during Saturday or SundayÂ’s races. The lone crash came in FridayÂ’s Happy Hour exhibition, as Tony Scarlata (K-5) crashed on the backside of the island.
However, the crash did little to shank his spirits, as Scarlata bounced back in a replacement boat to finish first in the K-Boats classification for the weekend.

So, John Newton was driving the 997, and Wayne got to run the PS18.....I'd say there was just a little mis communication. Must've been the noise of the boats.......................MP

I seem to remember asking you guys to finish the race in Burley and you DAVE RANKIN said "We wouldn't have a chance." We were nice enough to oblige. The 80 boat was definitely fast and looked great!

The 80 boat was definitely fast and looked great!tony I think the dave's felt sorry for you after the crash, they didn't want you to have any excuses when you were trying to get the gold fish out of your helmet and all. they figured you lost enough money allready. and tony for get about drag racing, because billy was the first to the turn every race. :yuk: :yuk: :argue:

Gorgy, even you were the one that told me to take it easy and don't go crazy. The Traffic cone had plenty left to make it to the turn with anyone else. I cant think of one time that I didn't let off the throttle down the first straight to avoid going on my head. I only wish it would have been that way in the K5 Capsule boat. Billy's boat was the fastest boat there, no doubt about it. And clearly, there will only be one KING my friend :) :)

DUFF DAILEYtony i was only trying to keep you from embarresment and keep the cone right side up, i didn't see duff win one race there, maybe ty is the new king ??? probably lucky wayne's boat broke or you would've been in second, with ty or wayne driving if i would have let wayne loose on you. couple of more driving tips and wayne could be the next king. :argue:

The problem with that is we don't race for just 1 lap!!! :argue:No problem here. The idea is you cross the finish line first. Oh yeah thats what happened 4 times. Ty might have raced us hard but he only lasted a lap. :argue:
