I know this topic has been done many times over, but I need help. I need to get 4 new batteries for the boat and want to know if I should go Optima or regular old marine deep cycle. Input is appreciated.

When my batteries are shot, I am going to replace the starting batteries with some deep cycle ones and install a Sub 8D battery for the stereo system.

optima, blue tops. i have two for almost 4 years and they still work awesome. i abuse these poor batteries, never charge them and leave them in the boat at all times with the heat under a cover. not the best for any battery. still working strong ,my .02

I would get the optima blue tops. I have 2 battery tricklers that I put on my batteries during the winter. They keep the batteries peeked while they are sitting. I have had the same batteries going on 7 years and still work great. The tricklers are around $40 a piece. They are not battery chargers! They are ment to keep batteries peeked and thats all. Best $80 I have spent on ny boat.

If Auto Zone is out you can go to Sears. They will price match Auto Zone.

Costco in Santa Clarita and Palmdale were all out. I only saw Yellow Tops at both locations.

a friend of mine gets his batteries from costco and just saves the receipts and brings them back every year and says they dont take a charge. they have a good exchange/warranty policy. if you dont mind the hassle you can have fresh batteries every year with a one time purchase. never done it but it sounds tempting

Go over to the Audio/Visual forum and read until you pass out. There are a TON of options and opinions.
Personally, I've found an AGM (sealed) battery that will fit in my confined spaces that have twice the amp-hour output of the D31M Optima (166Ahr vs 75Ahr) and more than twice the BCI reserve capacity (over 330mins vs 155 mins). They are 19" long instead of 13" long, but otherwise dimenisionally almost the same (height/width). The D34M is even smaller with lower Ahr (55) and reserve (120 mins). The D34M is the more common battery as well.
Best price I had found on the Optima D31M was $172 each. These are $229 each, delivered. 2 year warranty on them too. Not sure about the Optimas.

This is what RV's often do for "house batteries" (non cranking). I may work for high power stereo use, but I don't know.
Put 2 6v's in series instead of 2 12v's in parallel. It is supposed to work much better all the way around for RV's.

Other than the majority opinion, what's the difference between the Optima Blue and Red tops?

There are two different blue top Optimas. One of them is a deep cycle marine battery. The red top is a normal cycle automotive battery.

I guess that's like robbing a bank but you don't go to jail for it. I imagine unscrupulous people like that is why we have to pay higher prices for the products we buy. Thanks :yuk:

Good battery scoop.
Dam that Costco return policy! I knew I was paying premium prices for a reason.
