View Full Version : Rope sucked into the impeller

Today at the lake I was going along at about 45mph and the motor bogged down. I got the boat to the shore and found a 2 foot piece of rope in the clean out. I removed the rope but the motor will not turn over 3500 rpm. Should I take the pump apart to check all the clearances?

Pull your clean out off and start digging. Dont feel bad. I sucked up 10 feet once. It makes for fun cleaning.

I'm thinkin you still got some in there , But the clearances might be an issue.

My jet sucked up about 50' of rope one time when I first got it. I thought I had gotten it all out using a razor knife. A short time later I had to rebuild the pump, and when I disassembled it there was some compacted/melted looking rope still jammed up in the wedge where the shaft enters the suction housing. My impeller was torn up pretty bad, I am sure mostly due to a failed thrust bearing, but I have always thought that the wedged piece of rope contributed to the disaster by throwing the shaft (and therefore the impeller) slightly off center as the thrust bearing began to loosen up. This is all speculation, but it doesn't take too far off center to make contact with the wear ring. . .

I got the engine cover off to get a good look in the pump clean out and I see no signs of rope. The shaft does not have any side to side or up and down movement.

climb under it and look up the intake.

I put 20' in mine this past weekend. Got it all out but I bet you still have more someplace. You MAY have to open her up to find it. could have gotten a chunk wrapped arround BEHIND the impeller too.

Looked in the intake today and still cannot see any more rope. Should I remove the bowl and take a look inside?

If the engine is still bogging down, there is something somewhere and it needs to come out.
I wouldn't worry about the clearances, all the same parts are going right back together. Pull the bowl and I bet you find more than 2' someplace. The only time Dad did it (1978 or '79), he got about 95' of a 100' rope into it (the handle wouldn't clear the rock grate and the other end was tied solidly on the "T").

Tonight I took the droop snot off and I still cant see any rope. When I shine a flash light through the bowl I cannot see any light come through to the other side. I guess that I will remove the pump from the transome and take a look inside...

Once the bowl is off and you see the straightening vane assy in the back, you'll understand why you can't see anything by looking in from the droop.

I got the pump taken apart this weekend and did not find any more rope in the drive. There seems to be some play in the shaft when the pump is taken apart. Can any one recomend a place in Phoenix to take the pump to?
Thanks

When you suck a rope up you should watch that it doesnt get up in the area where the shaft enters the suction housing, it can get up in there and throw the shaft off center and nothing good comes from that.
Clearances are not the issue here, although it would be nice to see them in spec.
That guy Dan Nelson is out there in Phoenix too.

There will always be play in the shaft with the bowl off, thats normal. The bowl supports the shaft.

Hi-Tech rebuild kits are $236, on HTP's website currently, plus impeller if needed/desired. Your labor is extra. That includes all new tailpiece bushings & seal, rope packings, Ult. Wear Ring, New double-row thrust bearing, seals for it, all gaskets.
