View Full Version : Which tunnel to buy?? I need some information

I sold my Rogers and I am in the market for a tunnel now to put the blower motor in. I would like to know which of the tunnels in the 19ft range have the most interior room side to side and which one do the seats sit the deepest in. I have sat in a Southwind tunnel and I felt like I was sitting on top of the damn boat instead of in it so they are definitely out of the question. I really don't want to go with a 21' Daytona yet because I still want to build a two seater hotrod although a 21' Daytona will probably be in my future.

yeah, i'm in the market for a 19-20ft. tunnel myself. what brands have room for the fam and still haul ass?

I don't care about having a back seat because I will not put one in, I just would like to have as much room for the two buckets up front as possible and not be sittin' up on a perch like I'm hanging out of the boat.

There is no tunnel that I know of that doesn"t have you sitting to high. A true tunnel does that by design. 24' or bigger can but not smaller. That's why I like the gullwings so much. It's a semivee in the back with a gullwing entry in the front. But you get to sit in the boat much lower and safer. Tunnel boats also tend to hook hard when stopping unexpectly. But that's my opinion and I'm sure we'll hear from the naysayers Budlight

I really like gullwings as well budlight and you certainly build a nice one, but I can honestly say I have heard FAR more stories about gullwings hurting people once over the 100mph mark than tunnels. I am sure that with any of them set up has a lot to do with it but I plan on putting a motor that makes almost 1100hp in my next boat and I really don't think a gullwing is a very safe place to put that much power from what I have seen at the races and been told by racers.

I believe the main problem with any boat, is that when you are ride adjusting the hardware for max performance, you make it much less safe. You are more than welcome to come to Boulder City and see for yourself how our boat handles. Setup is critical. Budlight Our boat stops straight at 100mph. Most tunnels don't Budlight

I know of a 83 Placecraft Tunnel that is for sale. It is a heavier layup but will handle any power you want to through at it. It is in good shape with original gel and parquet floor. Will sell less motor and pump with all the hardware for a BBC. PM me if interested.

If he isnt down for a SWTD, then I would assume the placecraft is out of the question too. To bad, they are the safest tunnel going with any amount of power.

I have driven placecraft and didnt think i sat high in it.They also handle very good can go upper 90s low 100s and let off throttle fast they come down nice and go straight.

Does the Placecraft have deeper sides than the Southwind tunnel? I really like the looks of the Placecraft and the Southwind tunnels but I just don't want to sit on top of the boat.

You are going to sit high in any tunnel, being that the seats need to mount above the tunnel. Southwinds tunnels are not that deep, so you are going to probably sit as high in any tunnel. My suggestion is a tom papp hull or take look at that placecraft.
Topp Papp Website (http://tompappracing.com/index.html)
If you still want to sit deeper in the boat and have a tunnel, a 21 daytona is going to be it.

The PC has lower sides than the SW for air entrapment, but there are easy ways to make the SW trap more air without the wetted area.Your going to sit about the same in any tunnel unless you cut the stringers down to what you like, but I would'nt do that.

Poncho, How fast do you want to go in a family boat?
The new Cheyenne being made by Ervin Capps is what I just bought a couple of years ago from HTP and it's a 450 lb. hull that is really strong. I can walk on the bow no problem, take 3' wakes, get airborne and still have a boat under me when I come down! lol It stops very straight without power from 100-I can attest to that. Corners good too.
http://www.hotboatpics.com/pics/data/3145/878december05_006_S_.jpg
From what I've heard from various people in the know, and several racers, the Cheyenne is probaby the best tunnel at the moment for up to 125-130 with your amount of power. The edge stealth is right up there also, but takes quite a bit more power to get them up and running good on an air-pack, however are more stable above the 125-130 range.
My best suggestion would be call Duane at HTP (316-794-8616) and talk to him about your wants & needs. He's a great guy and won't try and sell you. He's built quite a few of both tunnels, and has a really good handle on the technical end of both boats.

After a few different rides in my lifetime, ridden in 2 cp's and 1 daytona, I decided I am going to go with Pat's (budlight) Wicked Perf. hull. Talked to him today and liked everything I heard....even the price (going to be BRIGHT WHITE). Got off the phone with Jack at MPD and I am ending up spending a lot more $$$ than I thought but you only live once and I've got to have the best $hit I can afford. Figured I'd throw in my .075 Goodluck with the choice

I rode in a TPR last weekend 113 mph and it was a great ride. Turns without hopping and ran 113 and was stable with a TR motor. It was way safer than my SWTD and had a back seat. I want one. I knew this would happen when I rode in one or drove one. Next season I may have one. My vote is a TPR

Must be pretty spendy hull to have a sworn to secrecy clause, or every person gets a different price, anyone know who lays WPB up?? and do they do elaborate gel schemes??? I guess i could just pm budlight and get info from him, but i figure here there would be more info flying around.
Thanks

Jeezzz Todd, Just send me a pm. If I quoted prices. Everyone would think that's the price. I don't mind quoting prices but the internet forum is not a way to get an accurate price. Everybody's boat is different. Pat

here ya go! my tunnel project is up for sale. its a 19' outlaw. will take any hp but currently goes 73 mph with approx 400 hp sbc stroker. world heads, demon carb, elec fuel with bypass, twin 30 gal tanks, ss valves, full roller, bronze guides, forged pistons, all marine approved accessories, steel race nozzle with droop, welded intake with spoon, swim step, built in coolers (fat guy rated) custom upholstery, nice trailer. too much more to list. engine new last summer, very low hrs since pro shop built.
this boat i believe could see 80 with some minor tuning and one person. that is pretty impressive for 400 hp as you know, also the spoon and hull are designed to START working at 80 so this boat is a go fast. rock solid handling it is very deep and low, secure feeling and with the engine cover installed it is very fun to spin without worry of swamping! seats 5 if youre friendly, back seat is pretty spartan however, but it elevated a bit for a great ride! $11,995

I'm suprised I didn't see anything about an Ultra. Rode in one at around 100, and felt very safe and secure. Took the wake like a chanp, and was extremely smooth. I expected a lot more hoping in a 19, but it was a great ride...
