(CBS) LOS ANGELES A Southland woman gave birth to healthy quadruplets without the help of fertility drugs just three years after delivering triplets, her doctor said Monday.
Angela Magdaleno, 40, gave birth to the two boys and two girls on July 6 and was discharged from the hospital Sunday, according to Dr. Kathryn Shaw, who delivered the babies at White Medical Center in East Los Angeles.
All four babies weighed between 3.5 and 4 pounds, and although they need some oxygen, they are not on respirators, Shaw said, adding that she thinks the boys may be identical.
The babies should be big and healthy enough to go home within the next 10 days to three weeks, Shaw said.
The chances of delivering quadruplets without fertility treatment are approximately one in 80,000, she said.
Magdaleno's triplets -- one boy and two girls -- were conceived with the help of In vitro fertilization. She also has two teenage daughters aged 15 and 18.
The children were born after 32 weeks and 3 days of gestation, about eight weeks shy of a normal nine-month pregnancy.
Most women with quadruplets deliver at 29 weeks, Shaw said, adding that the mother was still moving around and healthy, if uncomfortable, before the children were delivered by Caesarean.
"She did amazingly well during her pregnancy," Shaw said of Magdaleno.
