Well, my friend finally got this old Skater out to the lake. Runs pretty good so far, he's getting used to it since he's just coming to the cat club. Things has a wicked hop at about 50 mph on flat water, but you can drive through it.
Motors were designed for F1 hydroplanes. They have twin vertical shafts and, so were told, a one off 8 carb intake. Motors were rated at 450 hprsepower each. Boat was originally built for a guy who was on the board of directors of OMC's Second Effort race division.
We were running in the 90's yesterday, should still have more in it.

Those F-1 motors are RARE and by far the baddest outboard ever made. Just make sure they have plenty of fuel.

Here's the whole motor. Check out the crazy bungee cord :p I asked Tony just what in the hell kind of rig job THAT was? He said the motor trim cylinders are attached to the transom bracket, but not the motor itself. The cylinder has a ball on the end of the rod that just sits in a socket on the motor. Supposedly, if you whack something at speed hard enough, the motor can rotate almost 180 degrees  into the boat. I don't know, but a lot of folks who have run these before say you should have some kind of travel limiter on the motors.

Craig, it looks great. Glad to see it's running. All of the 8's got 8-single barrel carbs though. Can you send me more pics? I'd love to see them. keith@stvboats.com

Looked under the cowlings today, it's not 8 single barrel carbs, it has 8 2-barrell carbs.

I'll get a few up tonight. We made it out to the ramp yesterday. Fired both motors (cough cough :p ) and one wasn't pumping water :( Tony thinks he put the wrong impellar housing back on when he changed them out. One motor has been heating up a little. :hammerhea

Great looking older Skater, the hull and deck look different from mine. You should tell your friend to think about some jack plates, they did wonders for mine in both speed and ride attitude.
I just realized it is a 32, but some jack plates would probably still help.
