If the ears we tightned all the way dowm, you have to hope they didnt wear into the shaft. You should be able to get in there and pull the old packings out, small screw driver something like that. Do you have new packings already?

Its Not Hard To Do, Get A Pick And Pull Out The Old Ones, Should Have 5-6 Ropes In There, Install The Other Ones And If They Give Ya Trouble Goin Back In, Use The Packing Gland Clamp To Push Em In.

yeah, I got the new ones,
so I should pick out the old ones, then just put in the new ones?
do I just wrap the rope around the hold and push it in?
how tight do I tighten the packing ears down?
thanks
Josh

good marine stores will have the removal tool( a screw driver looking thing with a wood screw on the end to turn into the old packing so you can pull it out rope by rope) then replace it with the gfo dripless graphite packing. you'll probably have to tighten it down once after testing for 2-3 drops a minute, then won't have to touch it for years!...bill.

You have to dig the old ones out. Make sure you off-set the packings. Yes, there real easy to install. The packing ears, make sure you dont tighten them to tight. I cant remember what i did, but you want some water to leak out of them.
