If they put together a motor that would not last a summer, I'd have all my stuff out of there and at a shop that builds "Jet boat motors" There is a science to them and you need to know what you are doing. If I reading correctly, you spent 4500 last summer and 3500 this summer. For that kind of money you can be well over 650HP and enjoying the ride.
Valves for marine motors are critical. This is the hardest use of a motor out there. If you want info on who I'd recommend in the valley, PM me. If you ask others, make sure they have had multiple marine motors done with the shop, anyone can set it up sloppy to last a few seasons.
Was it a roller motor of flat tappet? Spring pressures? Lift etc.
Good luck.

Jett Marine in Phoenix. North end of town. I know a few peeps with his motors and they run the hell out of em. My boat has one of his motors in it and its running great.

If it is fresh and you only hurt one cylinder, why not replace the piston and put it back together? Hell of a lot less than 3500 I would think. Would be worth it to have a shop mic the clearances when putting it back together.
Probally want to put good valves in it too.

Nelson at Jett Performance built my motor five seasons ago. I've run it hard and have put dozens of bottles nitrous through it. She's hanging in there.
It's way past due for a freshening up, but it'll have to wait another season.
http://www.homestead.com/jetboat/motor_shot.jpg
Stock rods, (reconditioned) Stock crank turned .010", forged pistons, (I picked them and the compression ratio I wanted), Total seal piston rings gapped for nitrous (these were expensive, they cost more than my pistons did), hydraulic flat tappet Clay smith cam (Dan Nelson picked a winner here), double roller timing set and all ARP fastners. It started out life as a dual plane, single carbed nitrous deal and I put the tunnelram and 660's on a couple seasons later.
Although I always want to go faster (more hp) I found this to be a good reliable combination. approx 500 hp and 650 on the juice. He built it quick (dropped the motor off and picked it up 5 days later). He did it for a good price, and it's hangin in there real well.
