Im pretty sure those cases are machined to each other. I don't think you can change just one.

They can be changed...There's a 3/8" Aluminum Plate that goes between them..

Which one are you calling the front cover? The one toward the motor or toward or the one the seats.

The cover towards the seats is the one I need. The water jacket has a crack in it and leaks water into boat.I took it apart and welded it and it still leaks ,figgured i'd try and find a good used one and just replace it.

What about turning off the water, we've never had any water going to ours. We run a Cole TR2.

I have thought abou that, Dad. This is a pleasure/ ski boat and i was worried about the gearbox getting too hot.

On my river v drive I don't run any water to the Casale and it never gets hot enough that you can't hold your hand on it. I don't think that Shirkey 4750 runs water on his either.

I run mine dry. You can always put your hand on it. It never gets much more then warm.
I wasn't thinking about the aluminum plate. I think on my C500 the two halves are machined together. But I guess you could even shim that for the correct back lash.

Someone told me the only reason for the water is so you can rest your arm on it and it won't be too warm. I don't hnow how true that is but you don't see diffs in cars and trucks needing cooling.

V-drive boxes run better dry, the oil stays cleaner because it won't build up sludge as fast due to the temp difference between the oil and the water. I run my split case dry and it doesn't get hot enough so you can't touch it. Run a good synthetic gear oil such as Redline 70/90.

I'm sure there are negative experiences associated with running one dry, but I've never had a problem. Your type of usage will probably dictate whether you need water or not. As stated above, use the "touch test" frequently and choose your lube wisely.
857,
I also understand that an excellent way of cooling your equipment down is to seek out the shade of low, overhanging trees toward the end of a hard pass.Is that correct, Jim?

we ran the v-drive in our 63 stevens for over 30 years without ever running water thru it. How many cars on the road run water to cool the rearends? you are not running it hard enough to create alot of heat

If you do need parts for your v-drive or just about anything else for your boat give Dan at Canyon Marine a call. He has extremely fair prices and takes care of his customers.
