Finally made it out west here to check out the scene and get in some serious river/tin boating. Hooked up with the folks at OutlawEagle and took a few boats out for testing on the lower Red Deer River the other nite and Dave jungle-boy-bald-eagle showed up with his pleasure boat. haha these guys need to reaccess their version of a 'pleasure boat' I think. Dave's running his 434 AMS plant in it and that 19 vbottom moves! Whats all the better is it can still carve out the turns when need be and it hit bottom a few times, even when I was filming haha
We did get a bit carried away at one stage and kinda washed him down a bit(alot)sorry man! but it did make for a pretty funny video lol He's a damn good sport and we had a few wobbly pops after and a good laugh. Im having a blast out here and the upper Red we ran yesterday was even wilder. I can fully agree with what I had heard before that you haven't lived till you've run the Upper Red Deer river in a sportjet. You guys need to book some time off and get up here for some boating! Absolutly beautiful country out here
I can't upload my video from out here but will post it when I get home. I will try a few teaser pics. Never ceases to amze me what a well setup aluminum hull can squeeze thru. We're talking shallow shallow shallow!
I spent the first weekend at the Peace River Marathon race and Dale from Outlaw asked me to navigate for him for the circuit race on Saturday. What a treat that was as he is now running the new 600 inch motor and we saw 114 mph in practice on saturday morning. Unfortunatly the wind kicked up a bit and the boat was setup too lose in race conditions and we could not hold those numbers during the leg. Its worth remembering that boat has a clean bottom(no loader/shoe etc) and is running a full rock grate! :O
Also got to see an ultra cool boat the boys used as a prerun platform. talk about a sweet ride check out the pic of this 21 sport with the newer wrap around windscreen. Powered by a 572, full interior, heat and stereo etc it still saw numbers in the 90's! :O
Im here till the weekend and will try to provide some more pics/stories from the heart of the alloy scene. Sounds like we're going to get in some more extreme boating and are redoing a camera mount today to get some seriously sweet footage
Cheers

Rampager,
Was the 572, the GM deal or aftermarket? 90s from a 21V in full trim is STOUT. Since you mentioned they were using that 21 for "pre-running" is it setup for more topend, and a takes a while to get on plane, or is it more a lake boat setup?
Someday, I'll nut up and do one.

It was good to finally meet the Rampager (James). The Upper Red Deer River is the Holly Grail of the tin boat scene in this area. It takes some seat time to master it (master is used loosely here!). You WILL tag every time out, but it's got no fisherman, no floaters and no canoers. James will hve some great footage with the new style camera mount that we were discussing last night over a couple of beers. He's moving out here so we'll be boating lots in the future.

Yea Dave is right that river is pretty intense and of course the whole time I'm thinking 'my 21 tunnel thru this? ummmmmmmmmm........' haha maybe maybe not but Im pretty damn sure I'll get some cool pics/video of me tryin!
The Lower Red Deer, where we washed Dave's boat from the inside, runs right thru Red Deer and the Upper(Upper and Lower are divided by a dam/resevoir) runs about 30 mins outside town all the way into the Rocky Mountains.
The Lower Red is alot more tame but would still be a kick for anyone not familiar with skinny water. We clipped a few times there the other night and you do have to pay attention.
The Upper Red is just unreal in spots if you're not paying attention you will be pushing for sure. Of course once you get a lil ego going and start stretching the limits a bit you do even MORE pushing haha Here you want a small agile light boat with a lil steel on the bottom and some plastic wouldn't hurt either. The tunnel will be a HUGE challenge in some of the channels off the main track. (hell even parts of the main track will be too)
The 21 sport definatly had a massaged 572 and I honestly don't recall the numbers it was making. I can find out. The boat did run a steel nozzle but definatly had absolutly no issues getting on step. I agree it is a sick boat and has a gorgeous interior. Also worthy of note is that it IS for sale and is brand new. (note: Just spoke with Dana in the shop, the 572 was worked to make 723 on the dyno. the standard 572 should push the boat easily into the 80's) I will go outside and grab some pics of it.
Impressive operation here indeed and I think some of you glass boat guys would be amazed at how nice a tin boat can be made to look/outfitted.
There's a few bare tunnels sitting in the lot right now, who wants to step up ??? ;)
Cheers

talked to the owner a little more. the 21 will probably do mid 80's with the 620 horse 572 and they expect around 65 with the 6L they usually offer. This boat may be getting a motor change as the 572 thats in it will likely be more motor than most would want.
Flat broke when you prerun the course you really don't need blistering speed you're mainly checking out where the danger zones are, rocks, gravel bars, standing waves etc Finding that stuff at speed isn't a good idea so a prerun boat can be(and usually is) something far less race boatish than even this boat. Often a sportjet or a sportfishing hull is used and can often help other racers who have possibly travelled a great distance, and do not have a prerun boat, to see the course. A few racers around here have a somewhat skewed veiw of what a "pleasure" boat is haha One racer on Saturdays circuit race found a good size rock and blew the whole pump off the rear of the boat. Sheared the suction housing just ahead of the bolt flange. Im told there is some cool video from a helmet cam on board as the boat sank lol Crew was fine and boat recovered as well as the pump parts found in the river after the race was over.
There is a ton of expereince around here and it shows in how these boats are setup and the performance they acheive. When you regularly boat things like the Upper Red Deer you'll learn pretty quick what works and doesn't. These guys are not easy on boats and to me that shows in the product they put out. Watching a test and tune session prerace last friday shows what these guys know. One impeller swap gave us 6 mph shortly before the race but sadly we de-wedged by 2 degree's last minute and it ended up being a little too loose under race conditions. It was shocking prior to that last change how stable the 21 tunnel is at 100+ mph. I didn't belive what I was seeing the first time we broke 110.
Glad you guys are enjoyin the pics Im in heaven out here lol
Cheers

What does a 21' hull weigh? Trying to get apples to apples (or close as possible)
My full stringer hallet 19' is right at 1000#, just hull and tanks.

Hey Canuck, seems like we're running almost everyday while im here lol
Yes Im around till Sunday, gimme a call and I'l figure out what we're doing. we do have some more rivers we're planning on doing before I head back but would be great to get together for some BEvERages ;)
I don't wanna quote the weighs of any hulls because im not 100% positive about them but I can assure you they are far less than what you quoted. the newer light weight race tunnels are less than half that bare, no tanks but tanks aren't that heavy. You won't match an aluminum boat for weight, especially when you factor in the strength these hulls have in the keel area. You don't break an aluminum hull in lake use thats for sure. I know my hull is supposed to be around 600-650 but its a '99 and alot has changed since then.
Its worth remembering hull technology in aluminum is forever changing as new designs and subtle changes are very easy to build into the next hull. there is a build jig but not 'mold' to limit you in what one can do on the next hull. Its a fact especially around here that what is learned whitewater racing gets put into all the boats to a degree.

Man that thing looks awesome with all the upholstery n such. I had no idea they could look that finished. Most of the ones I've seen have been in race trim and not very comfy looking for a lake boat.
I just might be sold.
I was in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan for the past two weeks. My sister lives on the Escanaba River. There's about a 1 - 2 foot of depth in most places with an all limestone bottom. From what I've seen there'd be plenty to run it with one of these. The whole time I was up there, I was dreaming of screaming (up and down that river).

#@$% you should have told me. My buddy Mark is in MI and has a 16 sportjet, I am sure he would have been interested in takin you for a blast somewhere. Not exactly the rocketship of a tunnel but Im sure he could have your heart racing riding up/down the Muskegon river or something. Im guessing jumping logs etc is foreign to you haha
Take the plunge man you will not regret it trust me. The boats aren't cheap but you do get what you pay for. You'll never need another boat again
Cheers
p.s. I hadn't seen very many full interior boats till I got here either and I was also very suprised how nice they can look and thats from a guy who could care less about interiors!

how much are they getting for a hull with a pump from eagle
how much can you find a used one for

Rampager
07-24-2006, 11:37 AM
I got the low down on bare hulls from Eagle. Few years back they started seeing hulls on the market that had been bought bare and rigged by others that had plastered Eagle stickers etc all over them but had brutal rigging etc done by private parties and it was really making their boats look bad. They decided to put a stop to it so bare hulls are no longer sold. For acurate pricing you should contact them for a quote. They are worth every penny and are durable as hell. (Race hulls may be the exception)
As far as used boats they are not that easy to find because people get one and don't want to get rid of it! I wouldn't sell mine, not unless its fully thrashed and only good for scrap lol
You do see used race tunnels here and there. The boats are damn easy to fix and modify and are fast. Eventually someone down there will start running these and people will be shocked
Aluminum hulls seem to hold value well too. Check out their forum and classified sections, you see them now and again. Its really a whole new ball of wax when u get into alloy.
The last nite I was there we went for a spin in one of their landing craft hulls about 18 feet or a bit more, this thing had a ton of space in it could carry 15 or more people easily, drive an atv into it no problem and with just 2 of us in it it did 55 mph with a 240 merc sportjet haha
unreal....
