I'm thinking an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon might be worth looking into for the desert adventures in the Rhino. Anybody have one or know more than I do <nothing really> about them?
Thanks, Chub

I know that all cattle fishing boats have them and they self activate once they hit the water.... Isn't that a Coast Guard based system?? Not too sure, but I think they cost a grip, at least for a commercial application.. Not sure if there is a civilian based version.
Just get On-star :rollside:

EPIRBs are for maritime use. The equivalent for land is a PLB (see http://www.acrelectronics.com/PLBorig/gypsi.html for example).

(And EPIRBs are readily available to the public (at Westmarine and other places). A cheapo model is less than $200. Nicer models are $1000 and up. Have fun! :)

It is a system monitored by the coast guard on channel 16 (156.8mhz), it is design to go off on channel 16 and then changes channels to an epirb channel. All commerical vessels in the us have them, most are designed on a break away system so if anything happenes to the boat it works.

Number 1 rule - don't go out alone, especially during the hot summer months. Always have another vehicle with you just in case.
Number 2 - Carry your two way radio and GPS, you should have no problem reaching someone on that.
Number 3 - How much trouble can you get in with your 50 hp rhino haha
