I am going up to Pismo Beach for a wedding this weekend. Neckties and flip flops.....could be fun.
What's there to do in town?
FYI We're staying at a friend's house, luckily they are away for the weekend. We will have the kids.

IF you did not have the kids, I would say to hit the local winery's.

Last time I went there I spent six hours in the Chevy dealership as they replaced my oil lines that I litterally blew off the truck on the drive up there. You can always sit in a Chevy dealership. :)

I wento to school in San Luis Obispo and worked in ismo for a few years.. Not much there except the dunes. However I would suggest a few things.
-Dinner at McClintocks in shell beach (they dont atke reservations)The steaks a the best around!
-Breakfast at McClintocks saloon in Arroya Grande. They serve a great breakfast.
-Drive to Avila beach ... very beautiful out there. Yoiu can have Breakfast or lunch there.
- Throw rocks over the cliff at the naked sunbathing dudes. Its on the way to avila beach. I think they called it Pirates Cove. Not sure ask your friend. :crossx:
-Get up before the tide does and go out to the beach near the pier and dig for huge clams...Kids will have fun. Alot of people dont know, but Pismo was know for its Clams. Sometimes you can just wiggle your feet and find the clams just below the surface.
-Rent a bike and ride the dunes..
Not much in downtown Pismo. Its old school.

Mandy-
Moneypit has some great suggestions on restaraunts. Also, try the Cracked Crab on Main street if your into sea food joints. The best!
... not to mention a short drive up 101 is Nacimiento. Worth the trip if you have never been there IMO.

If yur takin the 4x you have to drive down the beach even if you dont rent a quad. There will be so many freekin people there you wont beleive it. You dont have to have 4x but depending on the tide you may want it. Thers alway someone to pull you out though. I always hit SPLASH CAFE on the corner at the boardwalk. Clam chowder with the seafood topping. :p
Lopez is not muuch of a lake but worth the short ride to check it out. I camp there about once a year. JOCKO's in Nipomo used to be a great steak house
"Home of the 38 ouncer" or something. The ladies like Apple farm in San Luis. Cambria, about an hour up the road is an artist town and interesting if you have the time. Eat at the corner bakery/resturant its a used brick building.

I agree!! Great atmosphere, and great food. Every time I visit Pismo I make it a point to at least have one meal there.

I went to college in San Luis.. Tons to do, like check out the giant lesbo population in SLO...LOL
Lots to do. Surf, Pismo dunes, Hearst Castle isnt too far and super cool, Montana De Oro is beautiful up near Morrow bay.
If you go to San Luis (only 15-20 minutes away) there are some cool little bars, shops etc. The bar the Library is where Chuck Lidel worked for a long time as a bartender. SLO brewing company is cool. If you get a chance go check out gumball alley. Dont ask what it is, just ask where and you will get a kick.
Have fun. :)
Oh, and if you see that ***** of an ex-girlfriend of mine from 8 yrs ago, tell her I married a DR... :D Im just messin.

I met Harry a few times. He was a Cadillac man. The guy drove one of the Cadillacs that looked like a ranchero.
His bar is kinda a dive now.

Stop by Central Coast Kayaks in Shell Beach, the town just north of Pismo. Rent kayaks for the family and check out the coast line there, it's some of the best, tons of sea life and caves to check out. I think the number is (805)773-3500 and you can find them on the web. They are pretty busy in the summer so you may need reservations. Also, hit up Splash Cafe down by the pier, the best clam chowder in town. Have fun! :)

After all the bars you've been sent to you'll hafta take a leak. Head up to San Luis Obispo and stop at the Madonna Inn. (it's right off 101) Tell them you have to use the "bathroom." It's downstairs and is awesome!!!

Wow lots of Poly grads on the boards... Me too!
I'm surprised no one said Farmers market. Thursday starting at 6pm downtown SLO shuts down for a farmers maket. Most of the surrounding towns show up...Great times and fantastic BBQ. (Kids like it.) San Luis Obispo is your activity hub for that area. Nice shops & decent bars.
NIPOMO- JOCO's is better than McKlintocks. "The Hitching Post" in Casmalia is the best steak on the central coast if not the Nation...I'm not Kidding... http://www.hitchingpost1.com/ ....1/2hr away from Pismo near Vandanber AFB. If you don't go you are really missing out.
Lake Lopez is near by, and you can bring your boat. Avila beach is nice and the pier is fun. Los Osos has a great state park you can walk on the bluffs above the ocean with Morro Bay as the backdrop. There are sand dunes for the kids to play in as well. If you are up for a drive you can head north on the 101 to PCH and just drive towards Hurst Castle. Just outside of a town called Cambria (Artist Community- much like Laguna Beach) there is an Elephant seal rookerie. (1 hr drive and change) The big males are like the size of a large 4 door sedan. They just hang out on the beach. You can literally walk right up to them (You would be an Idiot if you did - Rangers are rarely present but people have been hurt. Great photo opp. though) easy to find, just look for all the parked cars on the side of PCH. Once you pass the Light Hoiuse you've gone to far. Winery's all around Paso Robles HWY 46W has some real easy to get to ones. Don't forget 20 min NW of Paso is Lake Nacimiento.
Pismo Dunes are great. One of the few areas where you can drive your truck on the beach. You can rent quads (even the Kids). Warm durring the days but it does chill at night.
HAVE a great time! I'm jealous.... I want to go back
