Would the 350 Mag be a better match for the size of the boat?
thanks.

Better yet I'd be all over this one: Less hours and less money and twice the boat depite the closed bow and a couple checkers.

With gas prices what they are and only expected to go up I think that boat is over priced. Make a low ball offer on that boat and see what the seller says. If the seller says no move on because theres going to be someone out there who's desperate to get rid of their boat and willing to accept a low ball offer.

How many hours are on it? Also try and get the HIN# on it and call down to Ultra in El Cajon or PM ULTRA28 on here to see if it is one he actually built and rigged. That is important. If everything checks out offer $36,000 for it. I would also go for a water test in it as well.

Where will you be using it?
I was in a 21 with the 350 Mag and was surprised how well it did. The boat had a 5 blade prop and did well for towing wakeboarders, but didn't have much top end. Heck of a good pull and got on plane quick, but its all a tradeoff. Worked well for the lower river though. Probably not so good on Havasu though.

My point was that there are TWO versions of the 7.4 MPI. One is 310 HP and the MAG is 385 HP. Both are Multi-Point-Injected (MPI) vs Throttle-Body-Injected (TBI).
Just don't want anyone to pay all the money and find out they have the 310HP motor when they thought that all 454 MPIs were the same.

Not to jack the thread but since all the talk on the motor sizes in the Lavey ad....
I called the Lavey owner as I was 1/2 interested. Very very nice guy and seemed real honest but not a motor guy at all. He really did not have a clue on the engine size or HP and was going on some data he got from the Boat shop where he just got an annual service. He got mixed up with their data and had to call and get back to me
It's a stock 7.4 MPI. He seemed very anxious to sell. Those checkers could be taken care of real easy by Mike at Custom Paint in LHC and you would have a 24' Lavey with 170 hours on for $34K or less I bet.

There was an 03 on Boattrader two weeks ago for under 30k with only 110 hrs. My buddy called on it and it sold in a day. There are good deals out there, you just have to catch them.
When I started looking for my new boat I put in a bid on a 2004 Lavey 21 XTSKI with only 50 hrs for 39k and the 496ho. Also a bigger boat than the 21 Ultra. I missed it by only a few hours. I ended up ordering somthing new though.

Wow,
I got a lot of info from this thread. Thanks for everyone's opinion it helps! Thanks for the PM Boat Spam, all nice rides! Me and the wife will consider them all, so many choices!! I am pretty limited to a 21-23' since that's all that will fit, budget and driveway! This is a first boat too I might add.
I boat, well in my friend's boat at Havasu, Mohave, Houseboating at Powell every couple yrs, and the lower river (blythe). I was looking at jets but it just looks like a jet needs too much HP to get to 60mph. It would also seem to me jet motors would have a shorter life because you have to run them at a much higher RPM to get the same speed. Then there is gas cost!!
I think the i/o is the way to go, I just can't take it out at Blythe (near I10), very shallow.
The 350mag/Bravo 1 seemed to do about 59-62 on the 21' 18 degree bottom Ultra, etc. I guess the 496Mag would do mid 60's?
Thanks for your help!

Re-read the posts above. The 21' has a 496 MAG (375 hp), the 24' Lavey has the mystery 7.4MPI which we are not sure of the HP, 310HP or 385HP version?
I have a 24' boat with that 310 HP motor and it does great for a cruiser/ski boat. Planes out very fast with a B3 and runs 50-55 top speed. But, this motor in a 24' Lavey will be a dog compared to a 7.4 MPI MAG with 385 HP.

After a lot of thought, reading most of the archives here until 3:30 AM Friday, Sat, and Sun. I think a 23' is the way to go. Fact is havasu is where we will do a lot of boating and without being able to ride in a 21 Stealth at Havasu I can only assume I will get beat to death.
I have been in my friends 21' Rogers jet and we got beat pretty bad in the main channel, it's ok down by Cattail but crossing the main channel Sat afternoon is not fun. I have not totally ruled out the 21 so I am going to see if I can get a ride in the 21 Stealth at Havasu next time I am out there.
The wife and I have looked at Eliminator, Shockwave, Essex, Cobra, Dana, andUltra. I hulls I like are the Ultra 23XS (used option only at this point  ), The Cobra 230 Razor, and the Eliminator 230 eagle. I really like the older Ultra 23XS, and Cobra 230 Razor the best, I love the lines on that hull.
Questions:
1. Better off just waiting for a used Ultra 23 XS (one built by J. West)
2. Anybody know the last years John was making this hull?
3. Going with the Cobra 230 Razor new or the Eliminator.
If I wait for a used (Ultra 23xs) how often do you regulars see them pop up? Am I just looking at the wrong time of year?
I looked at the 24 Stealth and loved it but it's WELL out of my budget, even used models at this time. The 24 seems A LOT bigger than the 23 XS.
Thanks for any suggestions!

I would hold tight a little while........boat prices are going to drop a little.........again.... i I predict a little, this will drive used boat prices down a little as well. There is a sh*t load of used boats for sale and they are mostly overpriced for a buyer (not seller).
Look at the spam section for Pete's sake.............there is a ton of boats in the trader etc.....
It is turning into a buyers market in the used boat world...........
Good luck

You cant go wrong with this boat. I used to have a 21 Ultra. The handling between the two is night and day. It is very similar to the Ultra 23XS and Cobra 230 Razor. I am going to do a little more research and see if John West gets any nice trade-in boats. Off to havasu this weekend to ride in my sister's 23XS again and a 21 stealth.

Love my boat and service at Cobra. Hard to find a used one, but if it comes along, grab it. Handles excellent across Havasu. 6.2 merc tops at 63mph.

Thanks for the offer Anthony! Nice boat! Same with that 230 Razor!
