How thick is that transom?

Jet Hydro

about 1/2"
I picked up a rochell the other day minus pump and motor and noticed the transom was 3/4 of just glass and another 3/4 of wood on the back of it. Compared to my apollo which is maybe an 1/8 inch of glass with 1/2 of plywood. I am guessing just the rochell hull weighs 1200 pounds or maybe a bit more but you won't find a spider "anywhere" on that hull.

Here is a shot of the pump-setback I did on my Omega which is what your Rochelle was splashed off of. It had 3/4" marine ply sandwiched between two pretty thick layers of glass. It too was heavy!

How well did that pump work with that droop?

Ken F

It worked really well, but a snoot from HTP worked quite a lot better.
Made a really different boat out of it. With the snoot was able to get it to
72.6 GPS with a fairly mild BBF.
here is a link to some pics of it.

What was done to the BBF and pump? Putting in a stock motor with a berk g at the moment to finish the season but getting some ideas now on what I want done to the motor and pump this winter.

Skeeter,
I wound up putting in Roller rockers, a 750 DP, Bassett TT headers, and a weiand stealth intake. It had a Jacuzzi in it when I bought it, and I switched it to a used Dominator that I got from HTP and it did best with an A/B impeller and the snoot & rideplate set-up you saw.
If I could offer you a little advice (having been there, done that) enjoy your boat at the 55-60 mph range. It is a great boat, with lots of room in it. They are very stable, and a good handeling boat. Great to tube & ski behind. The wife and I really miss the room to stretch out and relax that the old boat had. We now have a new cheyenne tunnel, and as much as we love it, and I love the speed, we often miss the room the old Omega had. I think you will grow to love the boat.
Don't get caught up in trying to make it fast. You will end up spending lots of money & time and in the end will be dissappointed. Though I've never seen a Rochelle in person, the Omega was very very heavy, and it takes lots & lots of HP to get them to run fast.

Ken
That's why I keep the ole SJ around. The Hydro is cool as hell and fast but it just isn't the same with a cooler of beer in the bottom as the SJ...lol..

I realize that and having been around jet boats I knew that and wanted something that had some room if I didn't go with a tx. The previous owner had an aggressor pump set back over 7 inches and droop with a mild 460, 600 lift cam with a set of ported dove c heads and it was running mid to high 60's on a gps. I do know that the hook was takin out also.
The motor that i am putting in it was out of my apollo that was a bone stock 8 to 1 motor that has just an port o sonic intake so I am expecting nothing really. I am using a g berk with just fresh bearings so I can get some use out of it before the season is over.
I want to build a mild motor this winter with either using a set of ported dove c heads with a cam around a half inch of lift. But another possibility is pick up an import stroker kit and run a set of cj heads that I already have and try an a2 impellor to keep the r's down. I won't spend a fortune on a motor though.
Thats down the road but I do understand that it wont be a hot rod but a respectable running boat.

Skeeter,
There you go. I'd suggest the CJ's definatly and a single plane. Maybe bump the compression to about 10/1 so you can still run pump gas. Stroker kit would be great if it fits in the budget. Think max torque for your boat.
Have fun with it!

The intake is now shoed and set. It took some work as the bottom is really rounded on this SJ but I got it set :220v: .
I should have the pump built this week and hope to be out on the lake by the weekend.:D

Well it looks like your at it again Steve. :) So is this the lake boat I need to look for you in or are you going to have the Hydro going again soon? What are you going to be using to power it, a BBC with the blower and carbs off the hydro?

Looks as if you couldn't get that pump any further back if you tried. Can you explain the reasoning behind the intake placement? Will there be enough support for a pump placed so far back?

Jet Hydro
07-31-2006, 03:58 PM
I could have gone back more but when I place a pump intake for speed, I place it where the shoe opening is at the very back of the hull. I have my own reason why I set up hulls this way. When placing an intake that far out of the hull you should use a brace on the intake. The floor is about 1" thick so it has more then enough to hold the intake but it only takes one aired out run to bust it out. There is no Wood in this floor so it`s strong as hell! But it will still get a brace on the intake.
Heres the one I did last month, it runs 74.7 with a small block 350 :D

its gonna be fast!! brett taylor's sj(agressor pump) is runnin low 90's on the first day out to the lake.duane said it was capable of more but needed tuning.wish i could swap out my je for a jc, i run outta pump before i run outta motor.if you've got at least 650hp, i bet it'll run 85-89 gps or somewhere close.

what did the sj end up doin this past season after the set-back upgrade?

Broke the crank shaft but it had a big improvement in mph. Cant remember the numbers right now but I remember it was up in the 90`s. I`ll know more this next season when I put the motor back in and have time to set it up.

i should've done a set-back on mine, i would have kept it if i could have tickled 90 with it.it had enough power, but never enough pump. good lookin sj!
