SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- A San Diego police sergeant, flagged down by a pregnant woman, delivered her baby on a San Ysidro sidewalk, police said Tuesday.
Sgt. Patti Clayton delivered a baby girl in the 700 block of East San Ysidro Boulevard shortly before 9 p.m. Monday, according to San Diego police Sgt. Bob Dare.
Clayton was flagged down by a 20-year-old woman who told her that she was about to have a baby, and then had it before paramedics could arrive, Dare said, adding that Clayton made the delivery on her own birthday.
Both the mother and baby were taken to a hospital and were believed to be in good health, Dare said.
Police officers learn how to deliver babies as part of their first-aid training, according to Dare.
