How much could I expect to pay for a nice BBC (454 or 468) to put in a boat. Top to bottom. I see alot of nice jets for sale with no motors and may have to go this route to save a bit of $$$$. Just curious. Thanks.

I would say 2500 would be a good starting place for a "good" bbc.

This sounds like a pretty good deal to me.

Dang, you'll probably want to spend at least $1500 on exhaust. Gotta be at least 5k. Maybe you could find a beater boat with a rebuilt engine.

How much HP are you looking for?

I thought that was about the price for a "good" crankshaft.

id say that ls6 ad is fair. ive got a 9.88-1 461 bbc that is fresh from carbs to pan with msd dist that i'd have to get 4K to let go. 492 hp @ 5500 on dyno.

I had a 509 BBC built from pan to carb. With my boat coming w/ a 455 olds I had NO BBC parts. 10.6 to 1, full roller Dart pro 1 heads, single Dominator 1050. I got some good deals, like the heads , already ported, for $1500. Anyway, parts, labor, and dyno ti me was just short of $10250.
Again that's from scratch. I had no Chevy parts to start with.

Does anybody know how much does DNE motorsports charge for there engines
on the average that they build for example like if you want between 700hp-800hp

Im just looking for some nice relieable power with some aluminum bling that pushes 65-70 mph. What kind of horses are need for that. I realize it depends alot on the hull and pump though but this is all ball park figures. I want single carb set-up too.

You don't need much power to acheive that MPH. Any Berkeley equipped boat with a mellow 454 should do that.

If you are starting from scratch. You would have to be a very good used parts scavenger to get away with less than $5000. Here is a guess at what you could get some parts for if you wait and search for good deals. Some of my numbers may be off but i have seen parts go for these prices.
block $600 (stock gm block)
crank $300 (gm non cast crank)
rods & pistons $300 (gm dot rods and used pistons)
heads $1000 ($1000 ready to go or cheaper and add a machine bill)
cam & lifter $200 (new solid lifters)
intake $100 (used)
carb $200 (used this may be to low a guess)
rockers $150 (new)
distributor $100 (used)
timing chain $100 (new)
cover $50 (used)
oil pump $50 (new)
gaskets $100 (new)
plug wires $50 (new)
misc. $1700 (hose, bolts, flywheel, balancer, oil pan, machine bill, etc.)
Total $5000
If you have to buy mostly new parts here is another GUESS or ballpark figure.
block $1800
crank $700
rods & pistons $900
heads $2000
cam & lifter $600 (new solid roller lifters)
intake $200
carb $500
rockers $150
distributor $200
timing chain $100
cover $50
oil pump $50
gaskets $100
plug wires $50
misc. $2500 (hose, bolts, flywheel, balancer, oil pan, machine bill, etc.)
total almost $10,000
There is always tons of things you forget about untill you need them.

Lots of ways to make that power with DNE so it would be hard to put a price on that range without knowing what direction you wanted to go.

Well I have a eliminator sprint and possibly considering racing it next year and was thinking if I do that I would want to be doing atleast a 100mph between the 10sec-11sec bracket I talked to Dave at DNE and he is suppose to be putting me together a price to make the boat go in the 100mph range and as well use some engine parts that I have and stay single Carbureted

I've got a good running BBC with two 4's on a tunnel ram, 280 hyd camshaft, Aluminum GM heads, 10 QT oil pan, that I took out of a boat that I just sold. I did a leak down and compression test on it before I took it out and they were both good. It ran right at 80 mph in a heavy 19' Daytona. $3500.00.

If you only want to go 65-70 in a prop boat that wont take much if it is an 18' to 19' foot boat. say 450 horsepower!!! If you have a good base to start with you can get that much power reliably for around 4-6 thousand if you rebuilt it with all new parts and decent h beam rods. (important if you want it to last a long time) One important note: if you are going to try and do this on a tight budget spend all your money on the bottom end. Buy the best parts for the bottom end that your budget will allow. It is easy to pull the heads in the boat later on down the line and upgrade them if need be. but if you want to upgrade the bottom end later the whole kit and kaboodle has to come out. Just my .02 don't cheap out on the cam either, it is easier to simply put new heads on a motor and have the right cam in the motor for the heads you will run or want to run later.
Some people may disagree, But that is my opinion!
Some asked about 800 horsepower. 800 HP can be acheived for around 10k if you want to build a motor that will hold together for some time. That isnt using wild or exotic parts. but a scat crank, scat rods, quality machine work, good cam, high flow aftermarket steel heads (ported and polished), I have put a few of these together for people that were scared away from high end engine builders due to the high prices because they didn't want to mortgage their house to repower. I have not had one come back from these yet! Been 4 years since i put the first one together and the guy runs the piss out of it!
Another tip for you guys. the BLUE motors every one seems so in love with are just stock motors with nice parts bolted on to them. I have pair of the 500 versions torn apart right now and they are 502 long blocks straight from gm. They even have the stock gm truck rods in them and all, Cast pistons even! for $30k???? :220v: not me!!!

Good point I was not including any labor in that at all! that was for parts only!!!
