You are referring to the handhole cover? That is on the suction side of the pump. There should be very little positive pressure there. Item #4 (http://www.cpperformance.com/products/Jet-Drives/Berkeley/12jg_parts-drawing.htm) in this diagram?

What kind of boat?
Ive blown mine off and have frineds that have blown theirs off, it happens but you might have a set up issue thats causing it.
There are 2 ways to go about fixing it..You can machine the top of the clean out cover flat then fab a 3/16 or 1/4 aluminum plate to sit on top of the cover and have it bolt down using the existing studs on the jet..Or buy one of the bigger/stronger aftermarket clean out covers, I know MPD has them, some of the other jetshops around here might have them too, I doubt you could break one of those.
Good Luck.

For my own info- when does the cover blow off? When backing down off the throttle at higher speeds? Seems to me that would be when the suction housing would see the most pressure.

The boat is an old 17 tahiti. 455 olds 12jg a/b imp.
It happens at WOT w/diverter up at a little over 60 mph.
Almost didn't get to the beach this last time.

Ive heard of this happening before.I heard you take the pump and put it in another boat and problem solved. :)
I had the same problem in my old boat but it was from excessive pressure.I also got rid of the original handhole cover and bored the suction out and installed a Merch hand hole cover.

This is how I sunk my boat. I did what CS said, I made a steel strip that went over the hand hold cover.

FYI the suction housing can see pressures of 40 psi or more in a high speed boat

Is there a way to lessen or regulate this pressure or a setup change?
