OK, I didn't put it in when I built the house, because I intended to occupy the house within 6 months. The railroad has a different timetable in mind. So what I want to do is install a thermostat that can be controlled remotely through a computer on a highspeed connection at the house. Can this be done wirelessly?

Try this... http://www.smarthomeusa.com/Shop/Climate/
Or this is a telephone controlled unit. http://www.talkingthermostats.com/telephone.shtml
There are probably more out there, that was what came up with a quick google search.
I did the google search thing, there is such a plethora of units out there, I want to see if anyone has experiance with them before I plunk out the fundage $$$ :D

Proliphix (http://www.smarthome.com/prodindex.asp?catid=409) seems to be one of the few IP/Internet based options.
