I haven't hired a babysitter before. I have a neighbor teenager (15) coming tonight to hang out at my house for a few hours while the baby sleeps. All she has to do is watch tv. How much should I pay her?

No need to be cheap. If you want her more than once, show her you care about her taking her job seriously. After all, she is taking care of a precious thing, and watching over your home.
I say a $25.

It isn't a job you want to place with the low bidder.

We pay $10 to $15 an hour depending on how long our 22 month old is going to be awake terrorizing the house. If you don't pay enough it will be hard to get them the next time. We make many last minute plans so it comes down to us paying a bit more so we know that when we call they will say yes.
Grandparents = Free but not as avalible.
It just sucks having to pay $50+ to go out for a night

Depends on the age of the child to be watched......but our daughter gets anywhere from 8-15 an hour watching the neigbors toddler.

since she a neighbor and may be doing it for you again start her off at $9.00 per hour for the first 2-4 times and after that bump her up to $11 at least that shows her you appericate her and the job she is doing ps make sure to round up and half hours for her benefit

Is Steph doing it? If that is the case, you better pay her good. Hope you guys had a good night out. Was the band good tonight? Sorry we missed it.
I say a minimum of $12.00 per hour, sleeping or not. Especially on a budget like yours.

Ya overpay the sitter so they pick you first when the offers roll in.
$20 minimum when ya pull the flag down on the meter, then 10 bux an hour afterword, rounding off to the next hour.
You child is worth millions in your heart,, don't just flip the sitter a few bux and say: "keep an eye on her".
It's expensive being a 15 year old girl.
Loosen up, especially if she is supported by a single mom.

The more you pay the better chance that she isnt doing anything the next time you ask.
How old and what gender is your kid?
If you dont mind a 10 month old little boy tearing up your house or your kid in transport maybe we could watch over the little one. We dont do much anyways and wouldnt mind.

This is how it works, I have 3 girls and I have found pay good and you can allways get them to come back again. 4 hrs----3 young girls---- $ 100.00, they were sleeping also! I had the same babysitter all the way through the girls upbringing and I was never out a babysitter when you needed one on short notice.......This is just what I did :) Good luck with this !

I agree with everyone else...pay 'em well and they'll come back.
I also suggest leaving the fridge stocked with frozen pizza's, ice cream and diet soda. Make sure they know that they can help themselves. Microwave popcorn is always a plus.

Depends on if you want to use the same girl all the time. With my sitters I try to set a flat rate (like a salary). If we are gone for one hour to four hours we will pay $40. If we are gone four hours to eight we will pay $60. If they are longer (spend the night) $80 sometimes more. It is my opinion you should pay more than the average because that will help you with their availability (sp?) each time you call.
We also order pizza / dinner for them prior to going out (more than they will get from some boy takin' them on a date).

OK, for those who are curious, here's what I did.......................
Gone for 4 hours.........
Sitter kicked back at my place watching movies on the plasma.......
Had her sister over for company.............
They ate my food and drank my sodas....................
All the time my kid was sleeping.
I asked her how much I owed her, she replied "Anything's good."
So I gave her.....................
$30
