Hands down get the new 6.0 Vortec max with the 345 HP, 385 Lbs torque over the 5.3.
Day and night over the 5.3 and gets 1-2 MPG better. Can run on regular as well, Premium for towing as in the 5.3 anyway. Worth every bit more. Do not get confused with the regular 6.0 be sure it is the vortec max.

What do you tow?(Weight)
What trucks? (6.0 is only avaliable in the 1500 4x4 crew cab-Vortec Max)
5.3 Runs and tows great (Tows less than the 6liter but gets alot better mileage)
6.0 HO makes a ton of power and the truck flat out scoots.(10Klb tow rating and bad mileage)

I agree with everything but the gas mileage.
6.0 HO dosen't get better mileage than the 5.3
We get right at 21 MPG on the freeway while not towing with our 5.3
Most 6.0 owners are lucky to get 15 MPG

15 Damn!! I'm lucky to keep a constant 11 mpg w/33's(not towing). What does the HO/Max have in it that the reg. 6.0L doesn't?

My wifes 2000 Sierra has a 5.3 and it tows well. Nothing big though, steel, wood, boats, general towing stuff.
It gets pretty crazy "on the pipe", damn I think the engine is going to come out of the grille sometimes.
Around town and on the highway it gets pretty good gas mileage.
Overall I am pretty happy with it.
She has 125,000 on the odometer and mostly just maintainance stuff has gone wrong with it.
I would always go with the bigger motor, but that is just me.

More HP
Pretty sure 15 is as good as it gets and that is a stock 2wd based 6.0L
Our H2 gets 10-12 on a good day (Not Towing)

I have the 5.3 in My 2000 tahoe its spinning 36's on it not regeared and I've towed a 23 ft No problem. Powerful motor I must say. I just saw a 6.0L converson done yester in an 04 1500 4x4. I must say with headers, and dual exhausted and a chip that MOFO sounds mean! I am considering the headers and chip on my truck in a few weeks.

I am comparing my old stock 5.3 avalanche with the new Crewcab vortec max with 4:10 and stock tires. Both 4x4
I'm getting around 17-19 hwy no towing
Getting 12-12.5 towing 5,500- 6,000 Lbs
The new tonneau helped a bit. This is all 1-2 mpg better than my Z-71 Avalanche with the 5.3 and 3:73 gears. I was surprised too

I believe the HO has a different cam and programming. For some reason I want to say the diamater of the exhust is a little bigger as well.(Same motor as Escalade and Denali but it fells a ton better in the trucks)
they Dyno about 40hp more to the wheels.

I belive it's the alum block and much higher compression too. Check Chevy.com. Big diff, reallly feel it. Can smoke the tires

Your getting far better mileage than most report out of the HO.(Congrats)
The Avalanches are based on the Suburban chassis and are heavy pigs.Your new truck is probably 1K pound lighter then the Avalanche.

Unless the mileage computer is wrong, I've never gotten under 16 MPG around town and that is 85% town and 15% highway. Running over to cabelas yesterday (45 minutes most highway) trip computer read 19 MPG.
I run the tires at 40 Lbs and drive it easy for that mileage.

My 06 1500 Z71 with the 5.3 gets an average on 16.1 in town, and 20.2 on the highway unloaded. It handles mt 72 CV-21 just fine.

Yeah get the 6.0... POS
That way with all of the piston slap you'll have you will think you actually have a diesel.

do you want 15mpg or 13? my customers are gettin 15mpg outta z71 with the 5.3 and 13 outta the 6.0. there's not much seat of the pants performance difference between the two, but the 6.0 is a puller, the 5.3 has short legs.i have a 4.8 in my 06 4door 2wd that i tow my 18ft jet with and its got plenty enough balls for that.depends on how much weight you plan on pullin or how often you'll need to pull it.

Rumor is the '07 6.0 will have the Allison, and have the Flex Fuel option available.
Not too far off, might be worth the wait.

I average 14 to 15 when I am not towing in my 5.3. Less if I am rushing around town. Lucky to get 16 to 17 on highway at 75 to 80 mph WTF!

don't get caught up in the flex fuel options yet.it takes more e82 fuel to go the same miles as unleaded, not worth the pennies you save or additional wear on your mill, plus convertors clogged up fast on the e82, it seems to cause higher egt's from what i'm seein.

I have a 04 2500 hd 2wd Ext cab LB with a 6.0. I know its a heavier truck then a 1/2 ton but my combined weekly mileage hits right around 11.0 - 11.5. Trip to the river I can get 15 if I drive 65 to 70 tops no boat. Any faster and 13 shows up real quick. Tow the boat and 10mpg. The computer is spot on verified by my math and that amazes me.
Power is unimpressive. Even with the 4:10 gears. Truck in 100% stock.
This was bought mostly to work with.
It was a year end mark down leftover deal that I searched out on the internet.
5k in rebates.
$37K sticker I got OTD for $28,300 so I will just deal with it. Its one hell of a truck for $28K.
NOW - the 5.3 in out Yukon will best 20 mpg going to the river at 80 plus mph. No boat in tow. I dont tow with it though.

Wow, reading what you guys get with 5.3 & 6.0 makes me feel pretty good about my 8.1. I do know that the wife gets 2-3mpg worse than I do under all conditions. 2500HD 4X4 8.1L w/headers, 15 non-towing highway, 11 towing a 25' Howard, 8 towing the toy hauler (9K lbs). (me driving)
Go with the 6.0, there's no substitue for cubic inches (or liters).

I Have An '01, 2500, HD, CC, 8.1,allison.... It gets 8-10 MPG and it doesn't seem to matter how it's driven. My brother has the same truck , but his is an '02, 6.0....I'll take the extra CI and a little less MPG for the differance in HP..... And yes , his has the piston slap and the 4L80E problems....

I have an 02 Sub with the 5.3 and 33" rubber. We get about 17 on the highway and about 14 in town.
We have a new 07 Sub on the way with the 6.0. I'll let you know what it gets once Jay gets it in.

Don't buy the 1500HD.
I had an 03 and unloaded or with light gas it rode like ass.
The 2500 is probably just a tad more and rides better in my opinion.
If your looking to tow bite the bullet and have Jay find you a diesel.
