What is the CORRECT way to measure replacement cables for the helm and the bucket? I've heard overall length and sheathing length. Which way?

The cable IS out and measures 18' tip to tip, but the doesn't mean that if I order an 18'er that the cable company takes that as 18' sheathing and sends me a 20'er. With the post from 502Jet, that gives me exactly what we needed to know. Thank you.

Look at the jacket of the old one closely. The length may be marked on there. Either printed or impressed into the plastic. The part number, if there, will tell the length as well.

Should be able to take this real world example to the bank.
A Morse 43bc 180" cable measures 162" between crimps. (exposed plastic sheath)
It measures 180" tip to tip.
On steering; I just replaced an unmarked rack steering system and the following worked perfect for me.
