Just read an editorial in todays paper here in Havasu and was wondering what happened to Freedom? I think that the powers that be in Lake Havasu have forgotten about the word Freedom....The new ordinance related to the Channel will take effect on August 18th. The hum in the channel this last weekend is just exactly what will they do to the people in the channel...For example, if you are caught saying expletive words (even mumbling them) and a police officer hears these words you can be fined up to $2,500 or even receive a prison sentence....The verbage for the new ordiance goes like this...."prohibiting individuals who are intoxicated, and/or who are violent, seriously disruptive, unreasonably loud, or who utter abusive, obscene or offensive language, or engage in indecent exposure"....The word utter is really the important part of this concern...What happens if you stub your toe and say the "Shit" and a police officer hears that...you could, based on the ordiance be fined. I agree with some parts of this ordiance...but words can be presceived differently for those who our the powers that be? The weekend of August 18th should prove to be very interesting to all in the channel.
We met some great Nordic and Cobra folks this weekend and the parade's where fantastic. View this past Saturday Channel Shots:

I think somebody should get a large boat that is 1' under the legal limit to moore in the channel, and get large Vinyl Stickers that go down both sides that say
"F the New Ordinance" But with spelling out the "F"
According to the new ordinance I believe it would be legal.. But the F word down the side of a boat might be considered more offensive to some then say.. Girls dancing? LOL
Be interesting to see what happens.

It would probably be a good show, pull up a chair and watch what happens starting the 18th. Too bad I am going to be there a weekend too early.

Maybe I'm naive, but I think the ordinance will be enforced in a way that will make the channel a better place.
Maybe it will create some freedom for people to bring their families down there without having to subject them to a non family type environment.
The lake is a big place, and for those who feel they can't comply with the ordinance, there are lots of places to get away.

That is a good sentiment and I agree a more family friendly environment would be nice, but it disturbs me anytime I see politicians taking away personal freedoms. Especially for something deemed by some as leud conduct. Since when is it the Govs job to protect us from that and where does it end?

Freedom = responsibility... not anarchy...
I brissle at gov't intervention in my life as much, if not more than anyone, but it occurs to me that people had more than enough chances to clean up the behavior in the channel before the ordinance was passed... they failed to do so.
Flame away...

I agree. It's getting ridiculous everywhere you go. We had our 6 yr old on the water sunday. We were hanging out in a small cove with a bunch of other boats. Later that day a ski nautique pulls in with a bunch of punks and they start pounding their foul language and music straight from "no morality" row at everyone. F this, and F that. Ho this And Ho that. What in the hell is the matter with people. Take that foul home boy shit back to the ghetto.

From the way it's written no you wouldn't... But if so much as anybody read aloud what was on the deck.. Even if they "uttered" it quietly they could be arrested with a 2500 dollar fine, and jail time.
Just for saying "f.u.c.k."
Can you F.U.C.K.I.N.G. believe that shit?
I agree that things are getting a little outta control with the rap music going on next too the mom and her kids playing in the sand, and or the old guy just trying to enjoy his day. Point in fact the few times I've been there I even asked the guys on both sides of me what kind of music they like, and if they had any objections to anything that might come on to let me know and I'd shut it off ASAP..
There has got to be a better way to solve this (these) problems without giving total free reign to the cops to harass, arrest, and cite anyone they want with no restrictions.
Say some cop is giving you "the look" (everyones gotten it once in their lives) well now in the Channel.. Instead of the look they can just walk up and cuff your ass and say they heard you say something "offensive." Even if you didn't?
Somebody is going to get cited on this deal, and if they are going to end up in the $$$$ for sueing the shit out of Havasu for a violation of civil rights, 1st amendment rights, and god knows what else.. False arrest? Entrapment?
I'm not a lawyer, but I would think any one of these could be applied pretty easily by a lawyer..
On top of all this, where's the proof? If some guy said some "word" there is no tangible proof that he said it? Unless they have him on video? or voice audio? In which case, what do they do.. Walk up and say repeat it into the microphone?
This whole thing makes no sense to me what so ever.
If they were just going to give the cops free reign and totally disregard civil rights, etc... Why wouldn't they just say. "If they look like a gangster, problem starter, OC wannabe tattoo'd up thug, or are wearing a dew rag escort them to the city limits." (preferrably the North side of the city limit)
It's the age old classic case, of very few affecting a whole lot.

I would like to think that your boat would be "grandfathered in" as even the cops in the area most likely say, "hey-its that west coast focker boat" themselves!!! :D :D

You sound as if they are going to put up these ordinences, then will be taking them down once they have controlled the situation. This will only stem to MORE intrusion into our freedoms.
It seems Havasu has forgotten about the 1st Amendment of the United State's Constitution.
I really do believe that it has more to do with revenue for the city, rather than controling the situation.

Does the ordanance also cover the loud offense music? That seems quite simple to enforce. The Cal DMV law about music is quite stiff, IF enforced. If they enforced anything like that over there they can seize the offensive sound system out of the vehicle, which means they can impound the offensive vehicle. (I think). I totally agree about the gansta rap crap, take it back to the ghetto..........MP

No...I don't like the kid's who pull in and park with their ski boats and the crazy stuff on the overhead "boom" box. When we park on Saturday's, we are glad when we have good neighbors and we meet a lot of them. More often than not and I mean that. Corse, they must go home and complain about my Frank Sinatra and Fly to Me to the Moon. If I play the original of "I get my Kick's," they might just come and get me. I have a problem with the town that I live in (no I am not moving) but I support the boating community, each and every one of you. I watch you come, spend money, try to escape the SO CAL race (we left 5 years ago) and respect what you do for our city. No problem except for the occasional ski boat, for the most part...you guy's, people, ladies...are great people willing to help anyone, anybody in the time of need or distress. We (wife) have a problem when we talk to elected officials who have no clue as to the reality of the channel. It is a profit center and any of you who own a business would look at the balance sheet and agree. scuessss me, the wife is dragging my soap box back out to the garage.

Right there with ya. I don't have any issues with the channel. Then again I own a POS pontoon and could give a rats ass about the sandbar or any other areas with that atmosphere. I spend my time where I want and it just happens that we enjoy the channel.

Apparentley obscenity isn't protected in the constitution...
"Obscenity and Prior Restraint .--Only in the obscenity area has there emerged a substantial consideration of the doctrine of prior restraint and the doctrine's use there may be based upon the proposition that obscenity is not a protected form of expression"

This is a bunch of hoopla over nothing....if you aint doing the crime you wont do the time....
Come on, this law is for the a-holes who are coming to Havasu for one reason, to cause trouble.....
We drove out to Copper Sunday morning and yelled Fu** just to hear the echo...It was great...LOL
There was no echo in the channel...
And for the record, this law applies to the whole city, not just the channel
So don't be a loud, drunk, cursing a-hole in our city, or your going to the pokie...
Party on Garth........... :)
