The one legged bum has been working the offramp by my shop for the last two years. I have never paid much attention till 10 minutes ago. I was sitting in traffic watching him work. In the 3 min's I was sitting there he netted 3 paper bills. Lets assume they where one dollar bills. Now I know he's not pulling a buck a minute, but lets avarage that to about .66 cents a minute for the sake of argument because I'm sure some a$$hat will give the guy a 5 or 10 now and then. So that works out to about $40.00 an hour,or $1600 a week. $6400 a month, or $83,200 a year. If he only works it 8 hours a day 5 days a week. Sure the major traffic times of day must pay more, but the off ramp by my shop is busy all fricking day, and he's out there from at least 8-4. Holidays have to pay even better because we have Costco and the outlet center near by.
So I ask the guys in the shop. If I where to pay you your salary, Would you go out and work that corner and give me all you make? Not one of the bastards is willing to do it. I think that I might have to move in on the one legged bum and get retire his hold on that real estate. It seems like prime money makin dirt to me. Hell I might be able to parlay that into some Parker rentals next door to RD.
I'll bet that one legged prick owns a DCB! :)

I remember hearing a story about this lady bum that lived in my old Sunland/Tujunga neighborhood that when she died she had a few million in the bank. Supposedly made it all from panhandling.

I was listening to the radio the other day, and they were interviewing this bum who works one of the major intersections in L.A. The reason he was being interviewed is I guess he got caught "roughing up" this other bum. He told the interviewer that he was taking his wife on a vacation, and his sons alerted him that another bum was trying to take over his corner.
He told the interviewer that his technique was to ride the people in nice vehicles really hard, and that many times he would get $5-$20 dollar bills from them. He even bragged that he and his sons were making upwards of $500,00 per year! I don't know if it was a b.s. story or not, but I do know that I have seen quite a few "corner" bums with better cell phones than I would ever pay for!

They make coin sitting on the corner with a piece of cardboard with crayon writing on it.....No overhead, all cash business, still claim Welfare...etc....
Yeah, they got it better than most of us working our tails off, with no one to bitch at them for sitting around doing nothing. Seen it on the news, its quite factual.
.
I almost got jealous of the dude working the LAX exit, seen one guy in front of me drop a 20 in his hat

About 5 years ago, I had the same idea, although I took it one step further and thought, why not franchise the idea. Get a bunch of sociology students to work as the bums and make a mint. Still not a bad idea.

I really wish the local police would put a stop to these people sitting on corners.

I'm not above moving in on this guy, but the one leg will be a tough thing to beat in the marketing game. How can I beat that? Maybe I should go for the no legs skateboard thing like Eddie Murphy? Blind wont be an easy sell. Maybe just the truth will work.
" Social experiment, how much can I make begging?"
or maybe,
"Frustrated contractor, please help?"
I know,
"Want to buy a DCB need down payment"
This rates right up there with my whole take on religion, now thats a business.

Beats sign twirlers...... They would be better off begging since they are there anyway.

the only legit way to beat a one legged bum is with his own cane or fake leg! then people will know you mean business!

I put a roomate on the corner one afternoon. It was time for rent and he had spent all of his money all at the Casino. I put him on the corner with a sign that said " Why lie?? Rent's due and I went to the Casino." Left him out there for 2 hours. Thought I was teaching him some responsibility..
BASTARD came back with $50.00.
That's $25.00 / hour

Couple of years ago, a stripper and her roomate started working a corner in Austin, TX and reportedly made more money on the corner than in the club. Cops shut them down. They were wearing bikini's. As I recall, since someone reported their actions as offensive, they were made to stop. I thought it was a pretty good idea, they wanted vacation money for spring break, and it kinda took off for them. Of the people interviewed at the intersections, the guys were all smiles, the women all frowned. Bitchesmanbitches.

As sick and sad as it sounds, I've heard something very similar to this. There is a "Bum Pimping network" In New York. Specific "Professional" Bums have established areas and take a cut from other vagrants that they allow to work on their turf. I've heard of a Six figure income as well, but not to the tune of 1/2 mil.
