Question-
How many moving violations can a cop wright a lifted truck for?
A buddy of mine was shooting a instructional video for the State of California officer training. So me and the boy went over to check it out yesterday in Temecula looking for a little Dukes of Hazard action during the lunch hour plus my wife was posing as a extra.
When I took off one of the officers told him he could site me for 35 moving violations. Nice huh but is it true or is the guy just being a dick????

Oh, and the teal and pink boat should be about 10. So with D's 15, that 10 and the tint and mudflaps we're at 27 right off the bat. :D

As mentioned above, none of them are "moving violations." They would be cited as equipment violations that would have to be corrected and a small fine paid.
However, if you have extensive modifications, the cop could be an ass, decide the vehicle is unsafe for operation, and tow it.

Agreed.. The guy was full of crap. None of the obvious issues are "moving violations"..
window tint and no mudflaps, the tires can stick out but the full width and top 1/2 of the tire must be covered by a mudflap if they do, no front plate, are all correctable and would be fix it tickets (10 dollar fines)
Thats all i see. I have no clue on the front bumper but that truck definatly is not high enough to be over limit (head light, or frame) Our tahoe is lifted 13" with a 3" body on 40's and were only roughly 2" over the limit

Height does not matter. If the tires are wider than the wheel well, you need mudflaps. Due to the tires kicking up debri and hitting the vehicle(s) following behind.

In AZ you are not required to have a front license plate, but if the truck has been modified in any way that raises the stock frame height you are required to have mud flaps.
I thought in Ca. the only time mud flaps are required is if your tires stick outside of the wheel well.
My solution is to drive my Ca. registered truck in AZ, and then I take my AZ registered truck to Ca. while I am working there. It seems the cops do not bother to pull over out of state registered vehicles for fix it ticket violations, maybe because they do not know the laws in the other states.. :)

27600. No person shall operate any motor vehicle having three or more wheels, any trailer, or semitrailer unless equipped with fenders, covers, or devices, including flaps or splash aprons, or unless the body of the vehicle or attachments thereto afford adequate protection to effectively minimize the spray or splash of water or mud to the rear of the vehicle and all such equipment or such body or attachments thereto shall be at least as wide as the tire tread. In CA, this is how it reads:
It is not only as wide as the tire stick out, it is the exposed section to the rear. I am sure no one here likes catching a rock or nasty mud spray from someone when it could have been prevented.

The formula we have used and defended in court is the 1/3 rule:
Measure from the center of the (rear) axle to the hanging point for the flap or device, then take 1/3 of that distance. That 1/3 is the maximum height the bottom of the flap can be off the ground. SO, if the flap is hung 3ft back from the axle, the flap must come within 1 ft of the ground.
