Since allot of the deckboats have a cat bottom, are they rated any different as far as insurance co's. are concerned??

Yes, they are rated different but you have to look. Markel wanted 2400/yr with 6 mo layup to insure our 28' Deckboat with 496HO. A number of others were cheaper than that but still in the 12 - 1500 range. Debbie at State farm in Havasu would do it for around 650 no layup if I remember right and Progressive out of Corona wanted 790 no layup. But with State Farm if drivers need to be added to the policy they charge the liability cost for each driver, added 110 bucks per in my case. I went with Progressive only because of some of the kickers that went with the policy like disappearing deduct, roadside assistance on whatever vehicle is pulling the boat, replacement value, and the fact that there was no limitations on who can drive the boat, as long as they are a licensed driver (for those days when I drink on the water :) ). Progressive online and calling directly wont work you have to go through Alternative insurance in Corona.

Thats good info....same bottom but two totally different boats? I guess the HP becomes a factor as well.

Ask for Ricki, Just picked up my new Cobra 28 Deck with Ilmor 625, Just under $1300. Alternative had to broker it out because HP was over 500 and wanted $5800, yes $5800.

That is true with Alternative if you get over 500 HP then it gets brokered because they cant call it a family boat anymore and you will have to pay a lot, it's all up to the underwriters. ThatÂ’s why I gave both references. Like I said State Farm was cheaper but I liked the extras that came with the Progressive/Alternative INS quote so went with them. Good luck.

Try the Insurance God here on the boards, Shawn. He saved us lots of money on our insurance and I know he has done good for UnionJack also.

No it doesn't matter what kind of top it has i.e closed bow, open bow, house boat, but when they ask what kind of hull you have, if you say Cat bend over.
The other biggest factor in your rate is time behind the wheel. My agent came in with a quote of $1400+ no layup, after we provided proof of Ins for the past 12years on a Cat price came down to $600 a year + repair cost supplement that will fix any brake down under the Ins policy with out a dime out of pocket.

I disagree as a deckboat owner, it does mater what kind of boat it is. You are correct that a cat insurance is higher and even a deckboat is higher with most companies but a deckboat is not treated as a cat with a select few insurures and is far cheaper than insurance on a true cat. As is obvious from previous posts. MOST cat owners are paying far more than you are for insurance. There have been a number of posts talking about insuring cats and the costs of that insurance.

The funny thing is that a deck boat is more likely to have drunks on board and possibly a drunk driver since it is a PARTY CAT. However its less to ensure because they fall under the pontoon category I guess? With the popularity of decks accidents will be on the rise as well as theft. Will deckboats soon be the same price to insure as cats?
