A while back I had mentioned that my very good friend and co-pilot loved the ride of my boat,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so much so, that he wanted me to help him set up a better/faster one than mine! Regardless, we are working on a very cool 2007 Bullet. Its great looking, and it's going to have a nice motor package.:rollside: I have some pics, but I wanted to see if this thread showed some interest before I loaded them up.

The boat:
2007 Howard 28 Bullet, standard lay-up with candy red, blue and black graphics. The engine compartment is all carbon fiber, including the floor. It will have a carbon fiber hatch and carbon fiber TPI scoop. My friend is a bit more anal than I am. You probably wont see any catfish or bass near his Bullet! His loss!

Nice Gary...it always seem your engines out do the previous engine...you started big and then rounded out the line with the 700 and Single Whipple offerings that perform as good or better then the popular pixie dust motor magicians....I am suprised I have not seen more of your motors in boats outside the Howard stable....great work! Again! :)

Twin 3.3's! Holy crap!!! What is it, a 632??? Very impressive Gary, as usual! I'd love one in mine but the only other driver to eclipse 80 in mine was my Mom! The wife won't take it passed 75 or so. I only wonder what that engine would do in a 25. Some day when I "grow up" to a 28.....   !!!

Darrell.
The HP will remain undisclosed until we found out how he is going to insure this boat(lol). I want him to have a few different tune up's for the engine, depending on his mood. He will need to respect the power/speed of this motor/boat for sure. I would like to see a top speed of 118-120 mph. I really want to crest the 120 mph mark in one of these 28 Bullets. I think this is the boat that can do it.

Mike,
I appreciate the kudos. But the fact is, I have made a bunch of time for R&D and I have really fallen in love with my single Whipple combination. Between 840-940 hp. IMHO, that is the best all around performance motor that money can buy. Also, I do have a few motors in other boats, in Europe and across the U.S., and the customers love them. But I don't want to let this business get any bigger. It could happen real easliy. Fact: This year I have turned down more motor jobs than I took. I just can't build that many and still enjoy it. The enjoyment is what keeps the motors show quality and keeps me happy. Thanks again.

Rob,
Its only a 555. But it will run,,,,,,,,,,,,,. Hey, remember, I ran 111.7 with 988+ hp in my 25 Bullet. It's possible. You don't have to run that kind of speed every trip, but it's fun to have it available. :rollside:

I picked up a boat this year with a 496HO for power. According to my GPS I've yet to touch 65MPH. Yet when I went to buy insurance you would have thought I was asking to insurance an offshore racer.
So in the case where your literally building "a bullet" of large calibur, what do your customers run into? Is this a case where "if you have to ask you can't afford it?"
I ended up with Progressive, that basically outlines: No Engine or exhaust mods, no scoops on the hatch.
At $600/yr with a boating season in MN that is roughly 4 months long, it seems a bit spendy.
BTW Gary,
As always I love checking out your projects and this looks like a great one!

TPI
08-11-2006, 05:45 AM
I can remember paying 600/yr. That was nice. Here is the deal on a boat like this: A REAL insurance policy on a 28 Bullet with 900 HP is approx $4500/yr with no lay up. This motor will have to be set up to run approx 900 hp for him to get a good rate and be legit. If he wants to add more boost or make any changes, he will have to contact his insurance company and get a binder for the period that he is running more power than 900. There is a lot of money and liability at stake here, so I am sure he will be doing that. BTW, this motor will probably make 900 hp with 3-4 lbs of boost. I will be running up to 15+ lbs just to see what it will do.......................

I know this is a Bullet thread but has anyone else besides Scott done one of your motors in a deck? Any news on a BIG Bullet with twins????? 32-34 rumors? What kind of drive can handle the HP that your friend is going to Have? #6? Nice work as always Gary. Nick

TPI
08-11-2006, 08:10 AM
Thanks a bunch. Whats going to be interesting is the 400 lb differential between this boat with more power and my boat with less. I am thinking there has to be at least 3-4 mph in weight difference. The cool thing is, this will be a standard 28 lay up with a standard x-dimension. So any 28 Bullet owner can "hop up" his motor and have a great handling boat without making a bunch of other changes...........................

also, this boat will run a max machine worx drive. We have tested those drives up to 1400 hp and they work. Constant oil changes and smooth accelleration is they key.

The motor for this boat is just about done and ready to dyno. The rigging on the boat will start soon. I would imagine the boat will be in the water running by Halloween or close to it. I am hoing to make a couple fall runs out to Havasu with it(I am secretly hoping that because my boat 400 lbs lighter, that mine will be faster!). It will depend how much faster this boat is. I would think it would be cool to have a bunch of Howard Bullets out there, when we run it, maybe even a helicopter video? Definately video from another boat and or in the running boat,,,,,,,,,,fun stuff.

Just returned from the dyno. I am very pleased with this "900" hp motor. We have a very conservative pump gas tune up that made 1120hp at 6100 rpm. We also have a not so conservative tune up that made 1308hp at 6280 rpm. The motor seems to be pretty happy. Now it's time to polish off all of the fingerprints, detail it out, and prep it for the boat.

That will be a ride.
Should look very nice in the boat, I would think that your buddy should be very proud. That truely looks like one of the nicest combos around, just enough bling but not over the top. Good job.
Wouldn't it be cool to get the three latest TPI bullets out on the water with some kind of professional photgrapher? Big orange sandwiched between the red boats?
I havent heard from anybody, so I guess that gas is still in the Red barron.
You know you are still listed on my insurance.......
Once again excellent work, you can tell the thought and labor that went into it. How about some more pictures......

This is honestly the most powerful supercharged, hydraulic roller cam motor that I have ever been around. It is definately got some pep. We made several consistant pulls at 1300 HP, but the way it runs in the boat will tell the story. This motor also has to live, so it will spend most of it's life around :crossx: 900 hp.
This is truely going to be interesting in the boat. This boat will weigh over 400 lbs more than mine, so I wouldnt be surprised if it runs close to the same top speed mine did. I feel like the next hurdle for that hull is a smooth 115 mph. The boat handles, that is the key. The speed is secondary to me, but everyone likes numbers(dyno #s and top speed #s), so we will see what it does. With a boat, you just never know for sure. I know one thing. This is going to be the nicest Bullet I have seen so far.

OFFICIAL TOP SPEED POLL
OK,
You guys already got the jump on me, so you might have to post again after this. Here are the rules:) Guess the highest speed attained by this 28 Bullet during our test(coming soon). You get only one guess(ONLY ONE PLEASE). The winning guess will be the closest to the first decimal without going over. The winner will receive a TPI Tee shirt. If you guess the exact number down to the decimal, the winner will receive three(3)TPI shirts(whichever style you choose), Hat, Stickers, and a bottle of BOAT BLING HOT SAUCE!!!!!!!!WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Your guess will not count within three days of the actual speed/lake test(gotta keep it fair).
I am sure there is a loophole in these rules somewhere, but this is all in fun so lets start guessing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Don't even say that:D That has been a HUGE topic of conversation that I want to go away. Seriously,,,,, My boat is almost exactly 400 lbs lighter than this red boat, and that equates to a pretty big difference in top speed and a bunch of accelleration. I drove my boat at the end of summer with one of my 848's in it, and I was running 98.7 mph. A standard layup 28 Bullet with one of my 900's in it(approx 935hp) will run between 99-102 mph depending on conditions. So there is some food for thought. Also, I can feel a significant difference between my boat and a standard layup 28. The standard lay up 28 is very solid, nice, somewhat boring(IMO), where my composite 28 has a very "racey" feel,,,,,,,,,, for my flatbottom buddies, its like a pro gas flat with an Arias in it:D I like it. I have never dropped the hammer hard in my boat from 50 mph, but I guarantee, if the drive could take it, it would be pretty damn quick. Anyway, this red boat should sneak up on the speed pretty well, and seeing how it was so flat when I ran mine at over 113, I will be looking for some chop when we test this red one,,,,,,which will definately help the top speed.

It's definately going to be in Havasu. Seeing how this is some pretty good speed for a single engine stern vee, we will be taking all of the necessary safety precautions. I also want to make sure there are camara's filming, because if this boat can get to 120 mph, I definately want it captured on tape. What I really would like, is to have a helecopter filming off of the rear side a bit, as I would really like to see what the boat looks like in the water at that kind of speed. I would imagine there won't be very much boat in the water.

I am not sure of the elevation either, but it's too smooth up there anyway. The lake water should be cold enough in the Spring to do the job. If we can get a nice 1-2' even chop on the water, its going to be a good time.

After driving and feeling this particular boat, I really have to put it betwen 114-115 mph for a top speed. I think 120 is possible, but it is going to take big power, a VERY strong drive, and a couple miles of uninterrupted water. The boat handles very nice, and accellerates like a rocket, but these speed runs have to be safe and somewhat practical:D . After setting up several of these 25-28 Bullets, I would say that 100+ mph is a pretty easy speed to attain in either(25 or 28), but at 110+ for over a mile+ nonstop, you better bring a couple gas cards and camara to capture the experience, because after it is all done, and your on the beach drinking an amber colored beverage, it seems pretty unreal....................I love these Bullets!

Its kinda funny,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the video wouldn't play, so we made another one, and you cannot see what is going on, the only gauge we could locate on short notice was the red gauge that has a 100 mph top speed(but we had two other GPS's). Maybe I sabotaged all of the coverage so my boat would be the only Bullet captured on film going real fast? Doubt it.........................................
There is that little competetive part of me that knows this red Bullet has 1-2 mph more left in it,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,but I have to just let that 115 mph top speed hang there for a while,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, at least until I take out my own Bullet and run it with the new W305ax:D

like a million bucks again. 4300 miles in 7 days, with a five year old in the back seat. But it was a fun trip.
I hope that steve really enjoys his boat, she is a beauty and a runner.
115+++ THAT HAS GOT TO BE A FUN RIDE, Congrats.....MP

Hey Gary:
I just got off the water and came home. I have shown a lot of people photos of the TPI 848 (Blue) they were absolutely salivating. I just couldn't help myself when they ask about the power for our new Howard.
As for the first post glad you noticed that numerical annomally. I usually go online and listen watch and wait even on Offshoreonly. Forums can be so addicting I'd rather be on the water with my family and limit my time online. Unless it's about a screaming fast 28 Bullet with a TPI motor putting up monster numbers:D :D .
Speaking of water, I caught some monster small mouth bass this weekend off the transom of my Lavey:) :) .
A lot of people besides my family are awaiting the build and viewing of the Howard 28 Sportdeck with that TPI 848 beauty. Once the package comes together I know it will be a sweet setup sorta Clark Kent around the Channel and Superman past the bouys:D .
I have dropped the TPI name a lot this last week with Desert Storm PR and several friends/acquiantances who now all want to know more about TPI. It also helps when I have photos in hand all the dropped jaws--- puts a smile on my face :D :D.
Once again, great job on this 28 Bullet and you know our boat will have a TPI emblem on both port and starboard sterns.

Gary, thank you very much for the t shirt offer, but I'm going to take you up on that double or nothing offer. I figure you can get your Bullet to 120+ with the new blower. This time your the doubter, but I have confidence in you, and the Bullet.
Best of luck, and please be carefull.
Rick

Gary,

Its a Max Worx 900 with their new Billet lower unit. Its nice, and their customer service is just as nice. They build drives,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,thats it. They are in Lake Havasu.

You must be pumping about 1200hp to get that kind of speed. What did she dyno at? Is the drive going to handle this? I would have thought you would have gone with a number 6?

We made several dyno pulls with different boost, map settings, and different octanes. That motor has seen 900 to over 1300 hp on the dyno while we were setting it up. A lot changes once it's in the boat too. As far as the #6,,,,,,,,,its just to big and bulky for the boat(IMO). With frequent oil changes, and a steady throttle,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the MMW drive will live.

I had to come out of "forum retirement" to post this.........................
As of yesterday morning we ran 122.0 with the orange Howard 28 Bullet! The ride was absolutely smooth/amazing to say the least! We spun a 35 lab with a 1.35 GR up to 6400 rpm, and once again,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,it hit the rev limiter:idea: :)
Needless to say,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,the Whipple W305sc is very nice and so friendly all around. I seriously under estimated this boat, engine, and drive combination. I still have not even tried all of the idea's I have been working on to get this boat to 120,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and it just kinda did it itself:confused: , pretty easily I will add. Seriously, it was easy. The boat actually felt more stable, because the 35P prop softened up the torquey accelleration a bit.
I am confident this boat now can run between 125-130mph,,,,,,,,,,but we will never know(at least not while I own it):D
As of now,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I am so happy with the performance, I am going to sit back and enjoy this for a while................................
Thanks for following a long,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,and PHEBUS,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I owe you a couple shirts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!and a ride. I will be at the london bridge resort at 0730 am for the Absolute POKER RUN. Come by, I will get you out in the boat before everything gets started:D
