Hey guys, hows it going? As you can see im new to the forums :D Hoorah. I just picked up this summer a 72 eliminator w/ a 455 Olds in it. Everything is in -great- condition except the pump (berkley pump), it slightly leaks and id like to rebuild it. The problem is I know exactly nothing about what a pump looks like inside, or how exactly it works. Anyone got any good links/reads i could check out? or perhaps a rough estimate on what it costs to get the pump rebuilt (or a kit to do it myself although im a bit shy about it) Any contributions would be greatly appreciated!

i thought there was a thing here about SPAM? If you look around thats really a normal price anywhere for kits. Don't see what he big deal is. ST needs to give it a rest. Do they have a bed here for ya or something?
Just buy the seloc book to guide you thru and get your kit close so you can save on shipping. Shipping can be a doozy on this stuff if your not careful.

I need a kit and haven't bought one yet, but I for one hope ST doesn't "give it a rest". He is one of a handful that really make this board as great as it is. I was in the same position as Brad when I joined the board in December, and I now have my pump torn down and ready to rebuild, due largely to ST's (and a few others') willingness to answer questions. If Mr. ST, or anyone else willing to give there valuable time and expertise to newbies on the boards gets some advertising stroke out of the deal I say "more power to 'em".

If you have any mechanical aptitude you can do it yourself. You will need a couple specialty tools though. If you can borrow them that's cool. I made my own.
I'm not a cheerleader but I got what I thought was a good price from Duane at htp for the kit and he bent over backwards for me repairing the shaft and with advice on doing the rebuild. Just my experience. I was very happy with the results.
Good luck with your project!

I am sure some one has already mentioned it in a PM but I will post it here, are you sure it needs to be rebuilt? The jets are supposed to leak a little around the packing gland so that it does not heat up as the shaft turns. In other words, a little drip of water at the front of the pump might be normal.

Here is a great link for rebuilding a Berkeley pump:

There is more than one way to skin a cat, but this manual has a clear description and photos.

I'm a painter by profession and there arent too many jet boats on our lake here in western Ohio and even less people who want to work on them. I ordered my rebuild kit from cpperformance and a waiting paitiently to recieve it. Now I'm worried about shipping charges. Last year I couldn't keep belts on the front of the motor. this fall though everyone says I can do away with my water pump (the offending problem) . Which brings up the issues of What the dickens this engine should look like up front, where does water go, what other parts do I need for this set up, and why is there no water return jackets in the rear of the engine. I'm so confused and being a painter and not a mechanic, I really dont know where to start. Hours and hours searching the internet on dial up is just driving me crazy. anybody help me? Daniel.

Try dons pump or the jet connection in toledo cant get any closer. I ordered something small from CP once and the shipping was ALOT more than the $20 part....never again. I called to find out what the deal was and just got the run around. They have great prices but they must balance the to make up and overcharge on shipping so be careful and keep that in mind.
Hey check your PM's..where do you boat?

Ron,
First of all it is not spam when the question is asked on price, and what is included. Second I understand your frustration with shipping cost, but lets say you purchase a Stainless kit from me, not saying you would, to your door shipping would be $21. That is almost a $1400 kit and quite heavy with the stainless impeller, shipped directly to your door from CP Performance. On another note Summit will charge you $10 handling for a gasket set as well as a BBC head. So it is all about the same. I charge $17 to ship a "B" kit or a "A" kit because that is what I am charged.
Ron I am not sure who you are and don't quite care, but to be a new guy and start slamming people that you don't know is quite wrong. Some day you will be in need and may need their help. Just something to think about.
Have a nice day

HEY MODS,
Doesn't this constitute spam? The items listed are for sale by ST, and as such should be treated as spam as per the new rules around here. If you guys are going to jump on people promoting their business in their sig line, I don't see why it would be any different in this instance. Personally I think the new spam rules are for sucks, but if a guy that's just trying to sell his boat has to play by em, so should the the guy that is exploiting this site for the purpose of advertising his services.

Brad,
I appreciate what you're trying to say. But my previous statement was nowhere near the analogy you used. I understand you were looking for info; to that effect all he had to do was PM you, or say,
"a rebuild kit costs from x to y depending on where you get it." To each their own, and sorry if you feel like your thread got hijacked. BTW, if you hang around long enough, you'll also probably realize that just because someone has 6,000 posts to their credit, doesn't mean that many, if any of them were particularly insightful. ;)
BTW, welcome to the boards.

The trouble with spam on the boards is that it interrupts discussion on a topic.
1) Whether you agree with him or not, Jim's "spam" usually contains good and/or interesting on-topic info along with anything that might be called spam.
2) Amateur spam police interrupt the discussion 5 times as much as Jim ever does.
3) Now I am interrupting the discussion myself by griping about amateur spam police - It could go on forever. :yuk:
Howsabout if any of us don't like a post we just report it to the moderator or send a private message to the offender instead of hijacking the thread?
Or, we could just use the scroll wheel or arrow key and move right past the "spam". It's easier than turning the page in a magazine.
All the griping is ruining the board in a way that spam never could!! :220v:
