2" for most standard loads, boats included
2 1/8" for bigger trailers.

2" generally up to 5000# over 5000# it jumps 2 5/16", under 3500# is occasional 1 7/8" Those are the 3 standard size hitch balls. Leading to the question "why do cowboys have two different size balls?......... so they can pull different size horse trailers!

IT goes 1 7/8" -- 2" -- 2 5/16"
These are the normal trailer hitch sizes

There is no "Universal" size. Depending what the hitch is, you need the specific size ball. Never try to tow a trailer with the wrong size ball for the hitch.
