View Full Version : Red Rocker Schiada update

Schiada Time
08-16-2006, 10:18 AM
This just in! Red Rocker's Schiada is hoping to hit water the 27th of August just before labor day. Last night I and a buddy re-installed the strut with fresh bearings, had Glenwood build a new prop shaft and installed last night as well and hooked up to the V-drive. Bought a brand new rudder 1-1/8th and am installing new rudder, stuffing box, etc. as well as the cavitation plates, exhaust tips all going back in later this week as they were removed from the transom being replaced. Last weekend me and my buddy Marcel marinized the motor and installed the Olsen pan and pick up. I am getting close. The boat has a new prop shaft, rudder, turn fin, strut bushings, shaft log seal, stuffing box, hardware and a brand 502 with freshened Turbo 400 is going in this weekend. We are moving right along and the boat doesn't look like such a basket case anymore. After we got the strut back in the boat and the new prop shaft last night I felt like we had overcome a hurdle. Now its all about re-installing the plates/transom hardware, dropping in my power and plumbing and re-wiring. L&L is going to build me a new harness so all the wiring will be fresh. I also got brand new SW gauges to maintain the old school flavor with reliability the 30 year old instruments could not provide. As many of you know money is falling out of my pockst like a waterfall right now but its going to be bad ass.

Thanks guys. the rotten transom was the only real large surprise and OC Boat Repair did a great job replacing that old transom with fresh wood and glassing everything back up. The floors and stringers are in great shape and the boat only has 6 stress cracks (pretty impressive for being a '74). They are in the normal spots up at the bulkhead and one on the outside of the deck by the bowlight and two at the back on the outside of the deck-all mild spiders. The bottom is cherry except I think the guys who owned it before did not have the best trailer habits as the turn fin, prop shaft and rudder were bent. i have bought a new prop shaft, rudder, turn fin, stuffing box etc. Hoping to make a alot more progress this weekend so i'll send pics to Hustler soon to keep you all updated.

Well folks the engine and transmission are in the boat and secured to the mounts. The driveline is hooked to the Casale and everything is spinning. I need to have a solid tranny mount made, get the wiring harness put together, plumb water and fuel, hook up the tranny cooler, hang the exhaust, mount and wire the bilge pump, install the new gauges, put oil in the motor and trans fluid in the case, drain and refill the Casale, toss on a prop, and put the interior back in and were off. Pics will be up soon as I have some from the weekend. I'm pushing as hard as I can to make it but there is stilll a fair amount to do so I am not out of the woods yet. We worked on Friday from 5:00 to 1:00 AM and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM and Sunday from 12:00 to 7:30. Some of that was parts chasing which always seems to take buttloads of time. Anyways enjoy the pics!

Travis...what is the delio with 1 morse cable steering? That is not a safe setup for that size of boat, or any v-drive for that matter. I know the morse double cable systems are tough to find, but Rex has a double system from another manufacturer that I think he said is just as good if not better and they are readily available and a reasonable price. I am not trying to be a downer...steering is just an area that should be overkill.
The boat I am getting has the old cable pulley system, but I am yanking it out for the double push/pull cable system.
Other than that, It looks great! How long until it is blown? :crossx:

Schiada Time

Frank- I was already planning on upgrading the steering cable. I'm also going to replace the throttle cable and shift linkage cable. I got in contact with the two owners ago and the boat spent most of its life in Texas. The guy was actually pretty cool and sent me some pics of it in the water. i'll send them to Joe to post. Except for the lame wakeboard pole it looks awesome in the water. I can't wait to finish it, get it buffed to a fine shine, relay the white pinstriping around the woodgrain, and get my own shots of it in the water. Thanks for all the thumbs up guys. Owning a Schiada has been a long time dream of mine finally come true.

That would explain a couple of holes in the stringers that are asealed up with Marine Tex. Minus the windshield and with the addition of a white rap Impy's 3-spoke billet steering wheel this is pretty much what she will look like once I am done. Trying to go to Superdave's tonight to map out the plumbing and spend some green. The interior is the same as in this pick although slightly more worn. Going to clean it up as best I can and run it for a few years as my bank account is in pain right now. all the underwater gear/motor and trans, wiring and plumbing and new transom put me in the hole pretty good.

We are working Thursday and Friday night on the boat getting the transom blocks fit back up to the transom for the cav plate, re-installing the side d-rings, and working on plumbing. After that all that will be left is wiring. I have decided to just be patient and not try to push for labor day. I need time to test and tune at Elsinore and get a feel for the boat. Besides I can ride in Pops Schiada and be the trailer bitch. Revndave has a 12x15 Menkins 3-blade I am going try as the 10-7/8-inch x15 is too small. With any luck I'll be ready for the water a few weeks after labor day and can squeeze one or two trips in to my folks place at Mead before its gets to nippy.

Why you loosing the windshield. I actually think that the reverse line(forward tilting windshield) adds to it.

Heading to an engine builders shop today to put the opil cooler and trans. cooler in a solvent tank and clean them out before hooking up the plumbing. I will finish up mounting the cav plate transom pillow blocks tonight and mounting the side hook d-rings and the cav plate hole bezel. We also plan to mount the oil and trans cooler and fuel pumps and get an idea of the plumbing needs. tomorrow afternoon I will head to superDave's and map out any braided line and fittings needed. All that is left after that is to do the plumbing and wire it and I am good to go.

Mounted my new SW gauges last night, got a detailed wiring diagram laid out by my buddy Tim that I am delivering to L&L today for the wiring harness. We re-installed the oil cooler, trans cooler and lines and got the transom pillow blocks mounted and the lower turn buckle pins we originall disconnected back in place. I need to work out my exhaust situation which I have a friend on the case for that and then I can go to Superdave's and buy some lines and misc fittings. From the looks of things last night it does not look like I need to much there. The other thing that popped into my head was a fuel pressure regulator. Any thoughts? Maybe I'll just get a Holley one like I ran on my last boat.

Everything is now back on the transom and the cav plate is fully bolted up. I will be picking up the wiring harness from L&L next week and working on re-wiring next weekend. I put all my new gauges in and new push and pull switches for the dash along with a toggle switch to change the fuel gauge reading. I made a list of the stuff left and we are definitely close. hoping to hit water intwo to three weeks.

You have a small boat. that's why it sucks. I grew up boating Mohave and it rocks. My parents have a '22 Schiada and we did fine for over 25 years there. now we boat on Mead. Buy a bigger boat or don't complain about getting pounded in an 18-19 shallow vee jet boat.

What are you complaining about? :p. Because you have a small boat :p. I've been boating @ Havasu for 35 years & never had any problems.......if you don't like Havasu..........stay home.....less time for me at the ramp :p :rollside: :p ........... or get a bigger boat :p :D

Hey mondo, too bad Lee didn't post something on his own Schiada website to advise everyone of the every other year deal, would have been nice to know!!
Or he could have let Todd or Larry know to post something from Jokers wild to let everyone know, or he could have sent out a mass e-mail to all of his known Schiada owners of his every other year, oh well , still looking fwds to Oct !! :)
I guess we can all be thankful that for what he lacks in PR/advertising and website development he more than compensates for with his boat building!

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm happy Schiada (the whole operation. especially Stan and his crew) cares more about their boats than their website/PR/etc. There are quite a few operations that seem backwards - focused on selling the boat rather than building it.

Its a maybe. Boat is at a trailer shop today and probably through the end of the week getting bearings, races, and seals done and a few other things fixed on the trailer. When I get back on Monday from Florida I will pick it up and drop it off at ART Carr's shop on Tuesday for the Trans. to come out and a spline drive and flywheel to be installed and the transmission changed to reverse pattern. Bob should take a few days for that and then I need to service the V-drive, mount my switches in the upholstery for my fuel pumps on/off and depth gauge and the seperate switch plate for my cavitation plates. Other than that i need to lube the stuffing box and do a once over. If I can't get it in water around here before Friday to test sorry guys I am not going to make it. even if the boat does not go I may still drive up and ride in Mom and dad's Schiada. I'm disappointed but she has gotta be right before I venture to the river.

Good call Trav. Sorry to hear about the transmission & flexplate problem. You are doing the right thing. You will be pleased with the reverse pattern in the transmission and the 'Art Carr' spline shaft is to proper way to go. Be sure and have them leave the 'parking' pawl in. This will allow you to lock the prop shaft when you run the motor on the trailer. Saves your strut bearings. Perhaps the grinding noise was a good thing as you will now have a 'proper' Schiada 'V' drive. I have been getting some static about launching the Whaler on the 14th. We may put the 'V' drive in after all. Good luck next week. Call if you need help. See you at the river.

Got the boat back this afternoon from Art Carrs and could not be happier. No more transmission noise and she purrs like a kitten. I need one more weekend to button up some wiring, do some clean-up work and then I can hit Elsinore and test. I will start a new thread under V-drives with photos of her first outing with me behind the wheel. Thanks for all the advice and help throughout the project.

What did Art find out? What was making noise?

Converter bolts were hitting the motor plate.
