Hello everyone..just went to put my fresh olds 455 in w/ the new 7quart moroso pan, and its a no go, i tried fanagaling things, but the pan hits the berkeley intake housing :(
Anyone else been down this road? are there any tricks I can do that I'm missing? is there a different brand oil pan that gull-wings out to give me 7 quarts that is maybe like 3/4 or 1" shorter? i was ready to just take a sledge and just smash it in! but that was me more upset than anything :)
ohh, and yes i'm new here :) and here's my 1973 Tahiti 18' project boat...

Hello and welcome!
Now isn't that a Olds in the top picture? What kind of pan did you have on then? I run a 10qt pan and don't have any probs.
Good luck.

thanks for the comp!
yes, its an olds, thats my boneyard 455, just had the stock 4-quart pan on her, and if you didn't guess, she blew up :) she needed some souping-up anyways, so i went w/ some better pistons (w-30 high comps), better marine cam, had the heads done, lifters, push rods, rockers, springs, valves, all the oil-restrictor goodies the oldsmobiles need to have, etc, and now, she don't fit! i was all ready to get it in tonight and take her out for a ride!
my 7 quart moroso now is 8.5" in the deep pump area near the back, and its a regular shaped oil pan...http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=MOR%2D20480&N=700+4294908158+4294925067+4294840139+115&autoview=sku
i did see a 10 quart "marine" pan that is rectangular shaped, 7.625",

maybe this is what i need to do, i was afraid, and i dont think it would fit on top of my metal motor-mount cross-bar thing that goes between the stringers to tie the left and right mount together..maybe it will?
guys thanks a bunch for taking a look!

I have a 10qt Dooley pan on my olds and its not close the intake at all. The pan you have looks like it sticks out toward the rear a little bit. Mine comes straight down. Maybe thats it.

ehh, a little more searching and i see that the 10-quart rectangle pan won't work w/ my 3-point mount, its for a 4-point mount..
think i found what i might need though..

JS-925 8 Quart Oil Pan
Our 8 quart marine oil pan for jet boats with 3-point mount, side motor mounts with cradle strap under engine and rear jet mounting system. Stock depth with trap doors. SP-756/PU-3 or SP-765/PU-6 (oil pump and pick-up) is recommended for this pan. Our R-100 or R-105 oil gallery restrictors are also recommended.

Centerhill: thats a good one - holding an oar..
TJ:
I'm from Southington..bought the boat in Berlin/Kensington cheap w/ a seized motor (hadn't run since 97), rust/corrosion everywhere..i scrapped it and through in a junkyard 455 just to see if it floated and the berkeley pump worked, and it ran really good for a few hours :) i was so excited and had so much fun, i guess i drove it a little too hard and ended up just beating the snot out of it a few weeks ago..my first trip out I ran out of gas on the CT river coming home from the 4th of july fireworks..that was fun getting towed from hartford back to haddam in the dark. then the packing blew out and i flooded everything..
it also had a "soft spot" in the floor..

"borrowed" a holley double-pumper and a chromed one wire alternator from the dad's street rod parts bin, all new wiring front to back, hoses, electric fuel pump, and little here and there, and its not-too-shabby...been around boats since i was a little kid, and i just love the way that these boats look with a loud bad-a$$ engine sticking up in the back..

Mike , Right on. Good looking boat. Hopefully you will be able to get that 8qt pan on and hit the water real soon. I'm sure the boat will look and run better than it had in years. iT's always a good feeling to cruising in something you put some sweat into. Just feels that much better.
Darrell.

Nice boat I hope you get the oil pan issue worked out, but if I were you I would save the hammer for friend Jay with the New Balances on the gelcoat :crossx:

normal stock oil pans are usually 8 or 81/2" deep A jet oil pan has to be no more than 7 1/2" deep to clear the intake.

The pan I'm running looks like that Mondollar one. I think it's a Milodon? Has the M with an arrow going through it on the front corners of the sump.
Best pic I could find.

I have to remove the front crossmember and bolt it to the engine mounts to take it in and out. ;)

Malcolm - nice looking motor! what intake is that?
hey i noticed something - your bell housing still is attached - do you install/remove the motor that way? i've been pulling the bell housing bolts and man o man, is it a pain to get the bosses lined up...maybe i'll try w/ the bell-housing already bolted to the engine and see if it goes easier..
i also have the whole engine mount removed from the transom stringers - i dont even know if thats the right way, but it is a pain - got to be an easy way..
hehe actually, thats me w/ the new balances :) i will say, the boat looks very good in that pic - there are a paint bubbles in quite a few places (ugh! i think someone painted the boat at one point)

It's a Torker. Most people say it's not the best one for a 5000 rpm motor, but it's running pretty good now. It was giving me fits above 4500, which turned out to be a fuel pump problem.
I have a Jacuzzi pump so there's another mount that bolts on behind the bell housing. I leave it on too.

Mike,
I figured it was CT on the Ct river. Good luck with the boat. I have a Nordic I am still putting together. Hope to get it in the water just once this year.
I will be at Lake Zoar.
Later.
