If you missed it, you really missed out until next year- the 2006 Long Beach Sprint Nationals presented by the Southern California Speedboat Club saw some of the best flat & V Bottom professional boat racing as well as top teams competing in the Western Formula Light Series, PWC and Nostalgia classes.
With over 90 teams, dozens of vendors, beautiful V-Drive Display boats, perfect weather and throngs of excited fans, The Long Beach Sprint Nationals has become one of the best spectacles of boat racing on the West Coast.
Congratulations to all teams that competed during the two day event which saw two APBA National Champions crowned; in the Crackerbox class, a Three Peat for the P-74 of Steve Tustison and Jeff Hansen from San Juan Capistrano boldy going where only a very few have gone- 3 years in a row, 3 APBA Summer National Championships.
In the Grand National Class an unbelieveable race for the National Championship as the current points leader, Paul Grichar, West Covina, CA driving the "Plan B" #305 for Ben Marrone, Arcadia,CA took off and led for the first half of the 20 lap main event until Dave Rankin driving Rudy Ramos' ever present yellow Rayson Craft #9 powered by him to take control of the race and the checkered flag.
The return of the K Racing Runabouts saw the crowd again rise from their beach chairs and blankets to deafening noise and speed of the K's. Ty Newton, Mesa, AZ driving for the absent Tony Scarlata in the K-5 showed 'em how it was done when Gordon Jennings/Dave Rankins newest incarnation of the "Freedom Child" K-69 went over during Saturday's qualifying. Fortunately the capsule did it's job and Bryant walked away unscathed. The crowd let all the K driver's know how much they appreciated them back at Marine Stadium!
The 13 Pro-Stocks saw Mike Darner of Phoenix, AZ in the PS-8 take the victory over the previously unstoppable duo of Dave Rankin (owner) and his Driver, Dave Bryant, Phoenix, AZ in the PS 80 in the Second spot and the up and coming Brad Allerton driving the Grumpy II for legendary driver/owner Bud "Grumpy" Allerton, Castro Valley, CA rounding out the podium in third. Next year should be even bigger with the Pro Stock World Championships!
The Super Stocks returned in grand fashion after a year hiatus and the duo of Dave Rankin (owner) and Dave Bryant made it 4 for 4 with the fourth round over win going to the pair in the SS 80 over Payson, UT Loveless Family entry driven by son Karl Loveless #741 for Dad, Danny Loveless. Skip Tuttle from Oakley, CA driving the SS 711 finished 3rd.
The Nostalgia Endurance had one of the largest fleets seen to date in this class with 14 entries - celebrating his first win in the class since bringing the "Mead Snake" Hallet out to play was Dave Chandler of Las Vegas, NV in #855, 2nd overall went to Brad Stellman in ever present "Spearmint Rhino" #711 with Matt Wooton, La Canada, CA #346 driving the family Lavey Craft to a 3rd place finish.
Nostalgia Endurance provided the fans with some great V bottom racing but in the end it "Father Endurance" himself, Jim Best #145, Pinion Hills, CA edging out rookie Jason Dupuy, Los Alamitos #460 with Bob Williams in the #141 in third.
Again, if you missed it, you'll have to wait 'til next year in August to the 2007 Long Beach Sprint Nationals! If you can't wait and want to catch up on all the action on the water, visit www.spect8foto.com and view all the great shots by Tom Timm Sr. & Jr. and V-Drive Jerry's great website- www.v-drivevideo.com !

When was this picture taken? Every time I saw it, it was on a string being towed back to its trailer. Did it ever make a full lap under the green flag?

Luckly nobody was hurt. And like Superdave my favorite shot is Dave Rankin going into the turn. Dave and Grich put on one hell of a show both days. Great shot Jerry.

It seems that you have pened up anxiety. You know that if the K-69 was in proper working order the results would be quite different. Also when the boat was in Long Beach it had a far superior crew, driver and propeller.
